PURNIA: More than 100 individuals returned to Sanatan Dharma through a Ghar Wapsi ceremony organised by the Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) and Bajrang Dal in Banmankhi, Purnia district, on Christmas Day. The event witnessed participants undergoing traditional purification rituals, including havan, yagya, and the application of tilak, before declaring, “Hum Christian nahi rahe.”

Participants hailed from several villages, including areas under the Baisi block, and said they had earlier been taken away from Sanatan Dharma through inducements and coercive tactics. The public declarations and religious ceremonies marked what VHP leaders described as a Ghar Wapsi to Sanatan Dharma.

VHP’s Bihar-Jharkhand Dharma Prasar Pramukh Upendra Kushwaha alleged that Christian missionaries had lured economically vulnerable families using promises of financial aid and social support. “These people were misled and taken away from their roots. After realising the truth, they themselves chose to return to Sanatan Dharma,” he said, adding that the Ghar Wapsi sent a clear message against deceptive religious conversions in the region.

Several participants shared their experiences during Ghar Wapsi. Surendra Rai, his wife Meena Devi, and Kalu Harijan from Harintod village said they were persuaded to convert with assurances of material benefits. Meena Devi stated that after conversion, they were discouraged from worshipping Hindu deities and felt culturally alienated. “Our traditions were forbidden, and the way of life felt imposed,” she said, adding that she later approached the Baisi police station and contacted VHP for help.

Surendra Rai urged others not to abandon their faith due to temptation. “We made a mistake, but today we have corrected it,” he said. Kalu Harijan echoed similar sentiments, appealing to people not to fall prey to inducements or pressure
