The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) has scheduled a preliminary inspection and technical survey of the Ratna Bhandar at Puri’s Srimandir on September 18, following approval from the state government. The Srimandir administration has been notified accordingly. As a result, public darshan (viewing) at the Puri Jagannath Temple will be temporarily suspended on September 18 to facilitate the survey.

“The ASI authorities have informed that a team led by the Addl DG (Conservation ) and Experts from CSIR- NGRI (National Geophysical Research Institute) will conduct a preliminary inspection and technical survey of Ratna Bhandar of Shree Jagannatha temple this coming week. After discussion with SJTA officials and concerned Sevayats, it’s decided to have the exercise on 18th September, as per the government-approved SOP.”  informed Dr Arabinda Padhee, Chief Administrator, Shree Jagannatha Temple Administration  in a social media post.

The Jagannath Temple in Puri will remain closed to devotees from 1 pm on September 18, as the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) conducts a preliminary inspection of the Ratna Bhandar, the temple’s treasure chamber. The closure will enable the inspection to be carried out smoothly.

Meanwhile, Dwaraphita niti will be performed at 2 am, Mangala Alati will be conducted at 3 am, and public darshan will remain suspended from 1 pm onwards, as per the decision of Shree Jagannath Temple Administration (SJTA)

Chief Administrator of Shrimandir, Arabinda Padhee has ordered to review all the preparations and take necessary steps.

Earlier, as per the SOP approved by the state government, all the ornaments from the outer and inner Ratna Bhandar have been shifted to the temporary strong room and the empty almirahs and chests have been shifted. However, it was requested to conduct a survey using the latest technology before repair and conservation.

The Sri Mandir administration has requested  ASI  to take all necessary precautions to prevent any harm to the temple during the maintenance and repair work . The Chief Administrator of the Shrimandir has also urged the ASI to expedite the conservation and repair of the Ratna Bhandar, following a comprehensive modern and technical assessment, utilising cutting-edge techniques and expert professionalism to ensure timely completion.
