LONDON: Amid escalating racist incidents and targeted attacks against Indians, across the western world, three Indian students pursuing higher education in the United Kingdom were confronted by masked men belonging to a self-styled vigilante group at Meriden Park in Solihull. The racists questioned about their presence in England and ordered to “go home”.

The incident, filmed during a late-night patrol by the Chelmsley Wood Patriots, has triggered criticism from community activists, raised concerns over racial intimidation and safety of the Indian community amid soaring targeted violence. Further reports about repeated harassment and property damage in the area have intensified concerns over the safety of Indian students.

Indian students confronted by racists with false identity

The incident took place at Meriden Park in Solihull, in England’s West Midlands, where members of a group calling itself the Chelmsley Wood Patriots confronted three Indian students during a late-night patrol. According to reports, the men questioned the students about why they had come to England and what they were doing at the park.

Footage of the confrontation, which was reportedly deleted from the group’s social media account but subsequently circulated online, showed the men questioning the students about their backgrounds and reasons for being in the country.

One of the students explained that he had come to the UK to pursue a master’s degree and had been living there for two years. Another said that they usually stayed in Birmingham and had moved to the area that day. Instead of allowing the students to continue using the public space, a member of the group issued a warning. “What you need to do is stay away from a children’s park. Do not come round here again. Do not be seen here again. This is your final warning”, the man said before telling the students to “go home”.

The confrontation has raised questions about the conduct of self-appointed vigilantes who appear to have taken it upon themselves to question members of the public about their presence in the neighbourhood. The Chelmsley Wood Patriots subsequently defended their activities in a Facebook post, claiming that their members were conducting neighbourhood patrols to protect women and children.

The group reportedly cited concerns about local crime, missing children and sexual violence to justify its presence in the area. The group argued that parks should be spaces for children and families. However, its stated concerns about community safety have not resolved questions about the manner in which the students were confronted or the authority, legitimacy under which the group was operating.

Former councillor and community activist Shesh Sheshabhatter criticised the treatment of the Indian students. Sheshabhatter said that the students had done nothing wrong and had every right to meet and walk outdoors. He questioned the reason for singling them out, stating: “We can see no reason they were targeted other than the colour of their skin”.

He also criticised the group for damaging Chelmsley Wood’s reputation, arguing that the genuine patriotism should involve standing up for neighbours rather than intimidating them.

The episode has yet again surfaced concerns about the safety of students and larger Indian community in the UK, amid soaring instances of targeted racist attacks. One user on X wrote that the “UK is no longer safe for us Indians”, linking the incident to concerns about hostility towards Indians in other Western countries. The incident also reflected anxieties among Indian families considering overseas education.

UK is no longer safe for us Indians.

For a long time, the UK was the dream destination for Indians moving abroad, and for many, it still is.
But we rarely talk about how we actually get treated there.

Police reject association with vigilante group

West Midlands Police confirmed that they were aware of the group operating in the Chelmsley Wood area and of footage showing men being stopped at Meriden Park. Solihull Police Inspector Jenny Willetts made it clear that the group had no authority to exercise police powers. “Stop-and-search powers belong exclusively to police officers acting under specific legal provisions”, she said. “We do not endorse, condone or encourage the activities of this group and do not work with its members”, Willetts added.

Police said that they would take appropriate action when a crime was reported and urged anyone with concerns to contact officers. They also encouraged members of the public to contact emergency services in urgent situations.

Indians students repeatedly harassed; Property damaged

Concerns over the safety of Indian students further grew, following reports that the masked individuals targeted their accommodation on subsequent nights. Reports indicated that the students had faced intimidation over three nights, with a window smashed during a incident. The Chelmsley Wood Patriots were accused of involvement in the intimidation.

West Midlands Police subsequently confirmed that a 15-year-old boy had been arrested on suspicion of possessing a bladed article and criminal damage. The arrest followed reports of damage to a property in Chelmsley Wood. A police spokesperson said that the officers received a report of further criminal damage at around 8.40PM on October 14, Wednesday, after a window was smashed. Officers attended the scene, recovered a knife and detained the teenager for questioning, the spokesperson said.

Soaring anti-India hate crimes in the United Kingdom

The confrontation comes amid wider concerns about racial and anti-India hostility in England and Wales. Figures cited in various reports indicate that police recorded 1,46,825 hate crimes in the year ending March 2026, a seven per cent increase from the previous year. Race-related offences reportedly rose by nine per cent to 1,07,926, while religious hate crimes increased by 13 per cent to 11,419. The figures also recorded 210 religious hate crimes targeting Hindus in 2025–26, up from 182 in the previous year.
