On May 19, 2023, the Indian Army rescued five hundred tourists who were travelling to Lachung and Lachen Valley but were left stranded in Chungthang due to landslides and roadblocks caused by heavy torrential rainfall.
As per a request from the Sub Divisional Magistrate (SDM) of Chungthang, the troops of the Tri Shakti Corps and Indian Army swung into action and rescued the stranded tourists.
The stranded tourists included 216 men, 113 women and 54 children. They were safely evacuated, moved to three different Army camps, and provided hot meals and warm clothing. The troops of the Army vacated their posts for the accommodation of the rescued tourists for the night.
A total of three medicinal teams were formed who check the tourists. A woman who had visited Gurudogmar Lake during the day complained of a severe headache and dizziness. A medical group consisting of a woman officer set off from a nearby hospital and rushed to the location.
The lady officer detected signs of Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS). The woman was provided immediate medical care and was shifted to an ICU (Intensive Care Unit) in the medical hospital.
The next day morning, she recovered and became stable.
The quick reaction of the troops avoided any mishap and ensured comfort for the stranded tourists. Meanwhile, efforts are on to clear the road for vehicular movement at the earliest.
The tourists will receive all necessary assistance until the route is cleared for their further journey.
