The Karkardooma court in Delhi has granted seven days’ interim bail to Sharjeel Imam to attend his cousin’s wedding. The court has allowed the relief from October 4 to October 10, 2026.
Imam has been in custody since January 28, 2020, after his arrest by the Delhi Police from Kako village in Bihar’s Jehanabad district. He faces multiple cases, including one connected with the 2020 North-East Delhi riots.
The prosecution has accused Imam of being involved in a conspiracy linked to the communal violence that broke out in February 2020 during protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA). He is also facing proceedings under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA).
Earlier relief for brother’s wedding
This is not the first time Imam has received temporary relief to attend a family function. In March 2026, a Delhi court granted him 10 days’ interim bail to attend his younger brother’s wedding and take care of his ailing mother.
He was allowed parole from March 20 to March 30.
Regular bail rejected in July
The Karkardooma court had rejected Imam’s regular bail plea in July. The court referred to an earlier Supreme Court order, under which his bail plea could not be considered at that stage.
The Supreme Court’s January 5, 2026 order said a fresh bail plea could be filed after the examination of protected witnesses relied upon by the prosecution was completed or after one year from the date of the order.
53 killed in 2020 Delhi riots
The February 2020 violence in North-East Delhi left around 53 people dead and several others injured. More than 750 cases were registered in connection with the violence.
According to the information cited in the case, more than 250 chargesheets have been filed, with 1,153 people named as accused across the riot-related cases.
