The Jamui Police on Tuesday (September 22) shot Nandan Yadav, identified as the main accused in the case involving a Class 10 girl, after police said he attempted to flee during his arrest.
According to police, Yadav was hiding near Marwa Hill, where the two students had gone after tuition on September 19. When police spotted him, he tried to escape. Police fired and hit him in the leg. He was subsequently taken to Jamui Sadar Hospital for treatment.
ADG Law and Order Suhita Anupam said Yadav was trying to escape when the encounter took place and he was shot in the leg.
Police said Yadav is the person seen wearing a red scarf in the viral video linked to the incident.
Eight arrested so far
Police have arrested eight people in connection with the case. Two of the accused are reportedly between 35 and 40 years old, while three are minors. Three others have been accused of recording or circulating the video on social media.
Another accused, identified as Hareram, was also hiding in the forested area. Police said he tried to escape but fell and fractured his leg. He has also been admitted to Jamui Sadar Hospital.
Police earlier arrested Ramashish Chaudhary, who is accused of circulating the video online. Investigators reportedly identified him with the help of the footage.
Girl assaulted and harassed
The incident reportedly took place around 7 pm on September 19, when the two Class 10 students were returning from Marwa Hill after tuition.
According to the allegations, a group of youths stopped the students and subjected them to harassment and assault. The accused abused the male student and forcibly restrained the girl.
A video circulated on social media shows Yadav grabbing the girl from behind, touching her inappropriately and lifting her onto his lap. The footage has triggered widespread public anger.
Political row erupts in Bihar
The incident has also triggered a political confrontation in Bihar. Opposition leaders have criticised the state government’s law-and-order record, alleging a return of “jungle raj”.
The government has rejected the charge and said strict action would be taken against those involved.
Union Minister Jitan Ram Manjhi also criticised RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav over the incident in a post on X, calling on him to condemn the accused and saying that the government would not spare those responsible.
