LUCKNOW: The Uttar Pradesh Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) has intensified its investigation into the network linked to Shahzad Bhatti, carrying out simultaneous raids at suspected locations across 10 districts, including Lucknow. Several people have reportedly been detained and are being questioned as part of the ongoing probe.
The latest action comes after questioning of individuals arrested earlier allegedly provided investigators with information about a larger network. More than 150 people are now reportedly under the ATS scanner, with the agency examining their contacts, activities and possible links to the network.
ATS teams conduct raids across 10 districts
ATS teams have conducted searches at multiple locations across Uttar Pradesh, including Sitapur, Bahraich, Shravasti, Aligarh and Meerut. The operation is aimed at identifying individuals who may have been associated with the network and determining their specific roles.
Investigators are questioning suspects at different locations and examining information gathered during earlier arrests. The agency is also trying to establish whether the individuals identified during the probe had direct links with the network or were merely in contact with those already arrested.
According to the information emerging from the investigation, more than 150 people have come under the ATS radar based on inputs obtained from previously arrested accused. More than 60 suspects have reportedly been questioned so far.
The ATS is examining the nature of their contacts and activities before determining whether further action is required against them.
52 arrests made in four months
The UP ATS has reportedly arrested 52 suspects in cases linked to alleged terrorist activities over the past four months. Investigators have used information obtained during questioning to identify additional individuals who may have connections with the network.
The investigation has also brought to light allegations involving the use of social media to establish contacts and efforts to bring young people into the network. However, the role of each person currently under investigation is yet to be established.
Digital records and financial transactions examined
As part of the probe, the ATS is examining social media accounts, chats, digital contacts and banking transactions associated with the suspects. Investigators are analysing digital evidence to establish links between individuals and determine the nature of their activities.
The agency is also examining previously collected digital evidence and may seek assistance from central investigative agencies wherever required.
The investigation comes against the backdrop of action by the Central Government against the Shahzad Bhatti network. In September, the network was declared a terrorist organisation under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA).
According to the Ministry of Home Affairs, the network has been accused of involvement in the trafficking of arms, explosives and narcotics, besides attempts to push young people towards terrorist activities.
Earlier in August, security agencies conducted a major operation against individuals linked to the network across 14 states. The Central Government said that 253 people were detained during the operation, while more than 80 FIRs were registered and over 200 arrests were made.
Following the latest raids, the UP ATS is now focusing on establishing the role of individuals whose names emerged during the investigation. Digital records, social media activity and financial transactions are being examined to determine the nature of their links.
Further action is expected to depend on the findings of the ongoing investigation and the evidence gathered against individual suspects.
