New Delhi, October 13: Union Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting and Parliamentary Affairs Dr L Murugan has requested Prime Minister Narendra Modi to relieve him of his ministerial responsibilities and permit him to relinquish his Rajya Sabha membership, stating that he wishes to dedicate himself full-time to strengthening the BJP in Tamil Nadu.

In a letter dated October 13, 2026, Murugan expressed gratitude to Modi for the opportunities he had received under his leadership and said he wanted to return to grassroots party work, reaching people across the State and strengthening the organisation ahead of the 2029 Lok Sabha elections.

“With humility and a grateful heart, I therefore request you to relieve me of my responsibilities as Minister of State and permit me to relinquish my membership of the Rajya Sabha, so that I may dedicate myself full-time to strengthening the party in Tamil Nadu,” Murugan wrote.

It has been the greatest honour of my life to serve Bharat Mata and Tamil Nadu under the leadership of Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri @narendramodi Ji.

Explaining his decision, Murugan said the Prime Minister’s leadership and the BJP’s recognition of grassroots workers had given him opportunities beyond what he had imagined. He recalled his journey through the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) and the BJP, describing his guiding principle as “Nation First, Party Next, Self Last”.

Murugan said he wanted to visit every village and street, meet people, stand beside party workers and expand the BJP’s presence across Tamil Nadu.

“I want to go to every village and every street, meet our people, stand beside our karyakartas and help expand the party’s presence in every part of the State,” he wrote, adding that he wanted to carry the message of “Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas, Sabka Vishwas” to every person.

He also expressed his desire to work towards a stronger BJP performance in Tamil Nadu in the 2029 Lok Sabha elections, stating that he hoped to contribute to a landslide victory in seats from the State.

Murugan recalled his five years in the Union Council of Ministers, during which he handled responsibilities across Information and Broadcasting, Parliamentary Affairs, Fisheries and Animal Husbandry. He also acknowledged the Prime Minister’s support for infrastructure development and initiatives related to Tamil Nadu.

Highlighting Modi’s engagement with Tamil language and culture, Murugan referred to the Kashi Tamil Sangamam, Saurashtra Tamil Sangamam, the installation of the Sengol in Parliament and the Prime Minister’s references to Tamil literary traditions.

Murugan said his family background made his journey particularly significant, noting that his parents had worked as daily-wage labourers and cattle grazers. He described serving in the Union Government as the greatest privilege of his life and thanked Modi for the trust placed in him.

The letter concludes with Murugan seeking the Prime Minister’s blessings as he looks to devote his time and energy to grassroots work and strengthening the BJP in Tamil Nadu.

The request is framed as a move towards full-time organisational work in the State, with Murugan expressing gratitude for his tenure in the Union Government and a desire to contribute to the party’s electoral prospects in 2029.
