Khurai: An ancient Shivling discovered in a dense forest on Gaurar Mountain, around two kilometres from Itwa village in Malthone block of Khurai, has become a major point of religious interest, with devotees from nearby villages arriving in large numbers to offer prayers.

The Shivling was reportedly discovered around four days ago after buffaloes belonging to Itwa residents Abhishek Kushwaha and Deendayal Kushwaha wandered into the forest. When the villagers went towards Gaurar Mountain at night to search for the animals, they unexpectedly came across the Shivling.

News of the discovery soon spread through Itwa and neighbouring villages. Since then, devotees have been making their way through the remote and mountainous terrain to see the Shivling and offer prayers. Despite the difficult location, the site has reportedly remained crowded throughout the day.

Devotees have been worshipping the Shivling with flowers, water and other offerings, with many considering its discovery in the middle of the forest to be an auspicious occurrence and a blessing of Bhagwan Shiva. The discovery has also generated considerable curiosity among local residents, particularly because the Shivling was found away from any known temple complex.

Earlier Shivling discoveries in Madhya Pradesh

The latest discovery comes amid several instances in Madhya Pradesh in which ancient or previously unknown Shivling have attracted public attention. In May 2026, a large Shivling was unearthed during excavation work near the Mahakaleshwar Temple in Ujjain. The discovery prompted officials to slow the construction work, while priests and devotees gathered at the spot and offered prayers.

Similarly, in 2022, a large Shivling was discovered during excavation near the Kolar River in Chakaldi village of Sehore district. Local residents gathered at the site and began offering prayers after the discovery. Reports at the time said the structure had a long water-channel section and was considered by villagers to be an important religious find.

Another historically significant example comes from Eran in Sagar district, where an ancient Shivling-shaped structure dating to the Gupta period has been documented by archaeological authorities. The site is known for its important ancient remains, highlighting the region’s long association with religious and archaeological heritage.

Against this backdrop, the discovery at Gaurar Mountain has generated both religious faith and historical curiosity among residents. However, no official assessment has yet established the Shivling’s exact age, historical significance.
