Washington DC: The United States of America(USA) was set to celebrate its 250th year of independence with great zeal and fervour. However, the heatwaves engulfing the country exposed the reality of human-induced climate change and its catastrophic impact. Across many states, Independence Day parades, concerts, fireworks display & other events were cancelled, power grids were shut down, the National Park Service called off the events and even the iconic Great American State Fair on the National Mall was temporarily closed a temperature breached all the threshold and soared to 38 degree celsius.

🚨 100°F temperatures are now a reality in all 50 U.S. states — including Alaska.

Here’s a map of the hottest recorded temperatures.

As per the reports nearly 160 million Americans are under extreme heat warnings, which comprises more than half of the US population. Thus, the Independence Day celebrations on July 4 turned into a punishment & penalty for millions of Americans. Even the 2026 FIFA World Cup matches were threatened. The Central and Eastern States of the United States are worst hit due to the scorching heatwaves. As the powerful heat dome engulfed the United States Independence Day parades and other events were cancelled in the capital Washington DC, Philadelphia, New Jersey, Boston and other prime cities of the country.

The National Weather Service also reported that the heat index value reached 46 degree celsius in some regions. Meanwhile, the demand for electricity has surged to blanket themselves from the heatwaves with the aid of Air Conditioners. Thus, the authorities have urged for energy conservation. For instance, Power grid operator PJM ordered customers in emergency conservation programmes to reduce electricity usage. The network serves 67mn people across the Mid-Atlantic, the South and Washington.

On the other hand, people in cities such as New York experienced prolonged power cuts as the power grids were shut down to avoid grid collapse, melt down due to extreme temperatures and to manage the unprecedented spike in demand for electricity and overload due to acute & exhaustive usage of ACs and other cooling agents. About 17,000 customers were without power in New York by late Friday afternoon. The utility urged residents in New York City and Westchester County to conserve energy.

In the US, Events for Independence Day Are Being Massively Canceled Due to Extreme Heat. Temperatures in the capital today are expected to reach +43…+46°C, so organizers decided to cancel the event for people’s safety.

The Great American State Fair on the National Mall which was temporarily closed on July 4, Friday was apparently an event, designed to showcase all 50 states of the US and it was a centrepiece of President Donald Trump’s efforts to mark the nation’s 250th Independence Day.  The weather forecasting agencies and government officials further warned that the heat waves could be deadly, thus urging the Americans to stay hydrated, seek shade and watch for signs of heat illness. These heat alerts are paramount, as the majority of Americans spend their weekends outdoors.

What caused record heatwaves in the United States?

As per the Weather forecasts, A high-pressure system known as a “heat dome” caused the record-breaking temperatures across the United States. This weather pattern trapped hot air from the Midwest of the country and spread it eastwards, resulting in high humidity levels, predominantly in Central and Eastern America. Meanwhile, researchers and scientists affirm that the current catastrophic heatwaves overshadowing the US, is “virtually impossible”, without human induced climate change.

“The climate the country has today is fundamentally different to the one it had when the founding fathers signed the Declaration of Independence”, said Theodore Keeping, extreme weather and wildfire researcher at Imperial College London, as the United States was set to celebrate 250 years of Independence on July 4. The researchers further ascertained that the heatwaves and larger climate crisis is a direct impact of extreme burning of fossil fuels. They also reiterated that the current heatwaves witnessed in the US, is a once in 200 years catastrophe.

“But if planet-warming emissions had not heated the planet by 1.4 degree celcius, such events would not have been expected to occur even once in many thousands of years”, the researchers further stated. In fact, at the Great American State Fair on the National Mall(where the Independence Day event was cancelled due to heatwaves) more than a dozen people were treated as they suffered from heat illness.

On July 2, Thursday, in Pennsylvania, more than 100 people who had gathered at the Union Pacific Big Boy whistle stop event needed heat-related medical treatment. Thus ambulances, tents and cooling buses were deployed immediately. Also, More than two dozen trains were cancelled in the northeastern part of the US due to the heat. These are not isolated events, but a larger impact of human-induced climate change, which has been manifested in the form of terrible heatwaves across the United States.
