Ajmer: In a significant move reflecting cultural sentiment and administrative alignment, Christian Ganj Police Station and Christian Ganj Police Chowki in Ajmer have officially been renamed “Krishna Ganj Police Station” and “Krishna Ganj Police Chowki”. The change was made at the instructions of Rajasthan Legislative Assembly Speaker Vasudev Devnani, following repeated appeals from local residents seeking a name more reflective of the city’s cultural and spiritual heritage.

The Home Department issued the official notification after Devnani consulted with the police department, including Inspector General Deepak Kumar, directing the necessary action to implement the renaming. Following the order, the new name, Krishna Ganj, will now be used in police records, signboards, government documents, and all official communications, ensuring consistency across administrative and civic platforms.
Cultural and Historical Significance
Assembly Speaker Devnani emphasised that the renaming is a step toward preserving Sanatan culture in the region. “The name Krishna represents Indian Sanatan culture, faith, love, ethics, and the soul of the nation. It strengthens the cultural identity of the area and gives it a new identity while honouring public sentiment,” he said.
Krishna Ganj Police Station plays a vital role in maintaining law and order, covering a vast jurisdiction that serves approximately 150,000 residents. The police station oversees multiple neighbourhoods and is considered critical for city security. Renaming such a prominent public institution carries both symbolic and administrative importance, reinforcing the link between civic spaces and cultural heritage.
The renaming follows long-standing demands from residents who expressed that the previous name, Christian Ganj, had colonial-era connotations and did not reflect the local history or cultural ethos. Devnani took up the matter seriously, consulting with the relevant authorities and guiding the Home Department to issue the notification. According to him, this initiative is not just about changing a name but recognising Ajmer’s historical significance and cultural identity.
Past Renamings in Ajmer
This renaming is part of a broader trend in Ajmer to replace names with colonial or historically imposed associations with ones that reflect local heritage and Sanatan culture. Some notable changes include:
Hotel Khadim → Hotel Ajaymeru
Elevated road → Ram Setu
Previously, names symbolising slavery or colonial dominance were systematically replaced, a step seen as honouring the city’s history and the personalities who shaped it. The Krishna Ganj renaming continues this tradition, ensuring that public spaces resonate with cultural pride and local identity. Authorities have already begun the process of updating signboards, official documents, and other records to reflect the new name. Residents have largely welcomed the move, seeing it as a positive acknowledgement of their cultural sentiments.
