India–US relations, which had faced temporary strain following President Donald Trump’s unilateral decision to impose double tariffs, are now showing signs of revival. The thaw in relations deepened when US Ambassador-designate to India, Sergio Gor, met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi. During the meeting, the Prime Minister expressed optimism that the strategic partnership between the two countries would continue to strengthen under the new envoy’s tenure.

Ambassador Gor described his meeting with Prime Minister Modi as memorable. He presented the Prime Minister with a framed photograph of Modi and US President Donald Trump, signed with the message, “Mr. Prime Minister, you are great.” According to Gor, President Trump holds Modi in high personal regard and considers him a close friend.

Speaking to the media after the meeting, Gor said that discussions with the Prime Minister covered key areas of mutual interest, including trade, critical minerals and defence cooperation. Prime Minister Modi, while welcoming the new US Ambassador, reaffirmed India’s commitment to deepening the comprehensive strategic partnership with the United States.

An honor to be with PM @narendramodi this evening. Our relationship with India will only strengthen over the months ahead! 🇺🇸🇮🇳 https://t.co/g6AbLEOflf

Before meeting the Prime Minister, Ambassador Gor also held discussions with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar. Diplomatic sources indicated that these talks focused on ways to enhance collaboration and address ongoing challenges in bilateral relations. Officials noted that the ambassador’s visit is expected to pave the way for renewed dialogue on trade and security cooperation, setting a positive tone for the months ahead.

Prime Minister Modi, in a social media post, extended a warm welcome to Ambassador Gor and expressed confidence that his tenure would strengthen the comprehensive, global and strategic partnership between India and the United States. The Prime Minister also mentioned receiving the signed photograph from Gor as a gesture symbolizing the personal warmth between the leaderships of the two countries.

Sergio Gor, 38, is in India on a six-day visit, accompanied by Michael J. Rigas, the US Deputy Secretary of Management and Resources. During the visit, the delegation will hold meetings with several senior Indian officials to discuss bilateral cooperation. The visit comes amid efforts to ease tensions following the United States’ imposition of a 50 percent tariff on Indian exports. A senior government official stated that the meeting between Modi and Gore underscored the importance both nations place on revitalizing their relationship. The visit, the official added, reflects mutual respect and a renewed commitment to strengthening cooperation across strategic sectors.
