Sharing the initiative on the occasion of Navaratri and Durga Puja, Sandeep Chakravorty, in a post on X, said, “On the auspicious occasion of Navaratri and Durga Puja, our AI Avatar Dewi is here to guide her followers”. The initiative aims to bring information about the embassy’s activities and the broader India-Indonesia partnership closer to its online audience through an AI avatar.

India and Indonesia share close ties, which have witnessed rapid development in bilateral relations in political, security, defence, commercial and cultural fields under India’s ‘Act East’ policy since 2014, according to the MEA. Recently, Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto visited India during the 2026 BRICS Summit on September 12 and 13.

“Dewi” reflects India-Indonesia civilisational link; Resonates digital & cultural diplomacy

The embassy, in a press release, noted that the name ‘DEWI’ has strong cultural resonance in both India and Indonesia. “It derives from the Sanskrit word Devi, and is a common female name in Indonesia carrying the same meaning. Over the centuries, Sanskrit has influenced Indonesian language and culture. The name “Dewi” is one such example of shared heritage between India and Indonesia”, the release stated.

“Driven by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s M.A.N.A.V. Vision for use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and his emphasis on the adoption of emerging technologies, including AI, to improve governance and public service delivery, Embassy of India in Jakarta has launched its AI Avatar – DEWIon October 13, 2026. This launch also marks the beginning of festival season and auspicious Navaratri and Durga Puja Festival”, the Embassy statement further added.

Indonesia is home to approximately 1.3 lakh Persons of Indian Origin (PIOs) and around 15,000 Non-Resident Indians (NRIs), many of whom work as professionals, including chartered accountants, teachers and engineers. Dewi’s role is to bring useful information closer to the Indian community in the country, while also reaching out the Indonesians who are interested in India. Launch of “dewi” during Navaratri and Durga Puja adds a new mileage to India’s digital diplomacy and cultural diploamcy.
