Despite being illegal under Indian law, the slaughter of cows has become common, reflecting a complex interplay of demographic shifts, political appeasement, and social tensions.
In places like Sitamarhi, Darbhanga, Madhubani, Katihar, Samastipur, Purnea, and Kisanganj, where Muslim populations have surged to as high as 70 per cent, the sight of cows being openly smuggled, sold, and slaughtered on streets has become disturbingly routine. This practice not only challenges the legal prohibition on cow slaughter but also underscores broader societal issues and political dynamics. The situation is exacerbated during festivals such as Eid al-Adha, where thousands of cows are lined up for sale and slaughtered on roads, both for the festival and on normal days.
To address these multifaceted challenges, some voices advocate for drastic measures such as implementing the National Register of Citizens (NRC) and potentially reclassifying the Seemanchal districts as Union territories. Such proposals aim to not only enforce legal norms but also manage demographic shifts and curb illegal settlements, which are seen as contributing to cultural and social friction.
