Congress’s ‘Women’s safety’ claims under fire: Viral videos expose misconduct with female police officers in Delhi

NEW DELHI: The Congress’s allegations of police brutality during its recent protest in New Delhi have come under scrutiny after videos circulating on social media appeared to show confrontations between party leaders, protesters and police personnel, including women officers. With the Delhi Police examining multiple clips and seeking action against posts it considers misleading, the controversy has raised questions about the Congress’s portrayal of the incident and the conduct of those involved.

The episode has placed the party’s public messaging under the spotlight. While Congress supporters have circulated videos alleging excessive force by the police against women protesters, other clips have prompted allegations that Congress leaders and demonstrators themselves engaged in physical confrontations with police personnel.

The irony dies when you realize Congress posted the video from their official handle, complaining about police brutality on female workers.

Viral Videos Under Police Scrutiny

According to a PTI report dated October 8, the Delhi Police was analysing several mobile phone videos that allegedly showed police personnel, including women officers and constables, being assaulted during a Congress protest near Jantar Mantar.

Police sources said the footage was being examined to identify the protesters allegedly involved and reconstruct the sequence of events. An FIR under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita relating to assault on public servants, obstruction of official duties and other applicable offences was also being considered, according to the report.

Rahul, Priyanka Gandhi draw attention over viral clips

The protest took place after Congress leaders were stopped from proceeding towards Jantar Mantar to stage a demonstration. Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and other party members were among those detained by the Delhi Police.

Several videos subsequently circulated on social media, purportedly showing confrontations between Congress leaders and police personnel. One clip was reported to show Priyanka Gandhi Vadra elbowing a woman constable, while another appeared to show Rahul Gandhi pushing or shoving a woman police officer.

Delhi Police Flags 11 Social Media Posts

The controversy escalated further after the Delhi Police asked a social media platform to remove or restrict access to 11 posts and videos allegedly presenting a misleading account of police action during the protest.

According to the information, the police expressed concern that the content could provoke public reaction and adversely affect law and order.

The action followed the arrest of a 24-year-old man accused of circulating an AI-generated video that falsely portrayed a police officer as sexually assaulting a woman. Police are investigating whether the circulation of the fabricated footage was part of a broader attempt to malign the force and create public dissatisfaction during protests.
