NEW DELHI: The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) campaign for the Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU) elections has gained momentum, with ABVP candidates and workers engaging with students across colleges on campus issues and their concerns. Yash Dabas is contesting for President, Ishu Maurya for Vice-President, Riya Chhawdi for Secretary and Lakshya Raj Singh for Joint Secretary. The ABVP panel is contesting on Ballot Number 7-3-3-3 and is receiving strong support from students across the university.
DUSU elections have been held since 1954, while ABVP began contesting in 1971. In 1973, ABVP won all four posts in the first direct elections. Since then, ABVP has consistently secured the President’s post and a majority on its panel in several elections. In the 13 DUSU elections held since 2010, ABVP has won the President’s post nine times. This track record reflects ABVP’s year-round presence on campus and its sustained work on student issues. ABVP has been working for student welfare since 1949, and at Delhi University has taken up issues including nearly doubling PG seats, U-Special bus services, centralised hostel allocation, Pink Booths, Vamika Van and infrastructure development. Through the Great DUSU Internship, around 7,000 students have received training, while its Law Internship has trained around 1,000 students. ABVP has consistently kept student movements separate from partisan politics and focused on resolving students’ concerns.
ABVP Delhi State Secretary Sarthak Sharma said, “ABVP has always been the first choice of students because we work on the ground throughout the year to resolve their concerns. NSUI, having been exposed for its failures on the ground, is once again relying on lies and misinformation. This year too, dynastic and opportunistic politics is evident in Congress-NSUI, with a prominent Congress leader’s relative being given a ticket while dissatisfied aspirants have entered the fray as rebels. An organisation that cannot maintain coordination within its own ranks cannot claim to represent the aspirations of Delhi University students. Students understand this difference, and the ABVP panel is heading towards a decisive 4-0 victory this year.”
