Chennai: Despite restrictions on the height of Vinayagar murtis and the use of artificial paints, artisans and devotees across Tamil Nadu have once again displayed remarkable creativity during Vinayaka Chathurthi, producing murtis using currency notes, conches, sarees, dhotis, spices, Rudraksha seeds, coins, fruits, sandal paste and other materials.
Among the most striking creations this year is a murti depicting Bhagwan Ganesha lighting a lamp at an ancient stone pillar, reflecting the sentiments and expectations of the public amid the continuing controversy over restrictions and successive High Court verdicts.

A 40-foot-tall Bhagwan Ganesha made from 12,000 white conches has been installed in Kolathur for Ganesh Chaturthi. The constituency was represented by DMK president and former Chief Minister MK Stalin, who lost in the 2026 Assembly elections.

In Kancheepuram, for the 19th consecutive year, the murti has been made using currency notes of various denominations worth a total of Rs 25 lakh, wholly donated by devotees.

A massive plate-themed murti has also been drawing attention online. The 40-foot-tall Bhagwan Ganesha in Chennai was crafted using 6,000 Thambulam plates, 1,500 Kamakshi lamps and 350 seashells.
In Kolathur, Chennai, another massive Vinayagar was created entirely out of hundreds of sacred metallic yantras (thagadugal), traditional metallic plates inscribed with geometric symbols and used across Tamil Nadu to ward off negative energy and the evil eye.

AIADMK chief Edappadi K Palaniswami wished that the divine grace of Lord Vinayaka would shower blessings of health and prosperity. TTV Dhinakaran and other leaders also greeted people on the occasion.
The DMK, Left, VCK and Congress, however, continued their stand of not greeting Hindus on the occasion while extending wishes when minorities celebrate their festivals.
According to Hindu Munnani, 36,000 Vinayagar idols, including 1,562 in Chennai, have been installed this year with approval from the Tamil Nadu government in accordance with High Court orders.
The organisation said it had obtained approvals and NoCs from the Pollution Control Board, local bodies, police and fire services while complying with conditions imposed by the police. CCTV cameras have been installed at all pandals and are being managed by volunteers. As many as 16,500 police personnel and 500 home guards will provide security.
The immersion processions are scheduled to be held on September 19 and 20 along routes approved by the authorities.
