Singapore has long adopted the policy of zero-tolerance to radicalism, hate speeches, religious discrimination or any other forms of extremist & biased acts that are antithetical to peace, harmony, social cohesion and multicultural fabric of the city-state. It outrightly bans or deports hardliners who aim to fuel rifts in the society, through provocative and inflammatory statements. On these lines, over the years Singapore has banned numerous Islamic hardliners from entering the country, who were deemed as a threat to the unity & integrity of Singapore and who indoctrinated young minds to reep narrow religious deeds.
This Singaporean law of zero-tolerance to religious hatredness and extremist acts is indeed model to uproot the radical menace from the ground, thereby uphold peace, social cohesion, harmony of the society and security of its people. It creates an equal ground for all the sections of the population to live without fear and hate. On the other hand, Singapore’s ban on a series of Islamic hardliners also reflects how the radical Islamist elements systematically orchestrate biased narratives & hate comments to indoctrinate minds, destroy the social fabric & harness narrow illicit agenda.
The list of Islamist hardliners banned by Singapore
Imam Nalla Mohammad Abdul Jameel
Imam Nalla, is among the most infamous Islamic hardliners who was deported by Singapore for circulating hate comments against Jews & Christians. In 2017, he was barred from the city-state, however, he even pleaded guilty and sought forgiveness for promoting enmity. Such is the intensity of laws in Singapore against radicalism.
He pleaded guilty in a state court in 2017 for sowing hatredness among communities on the grounds of race & religion. A penalty of USD 2,860 was imposed on him and was deported. While in Singapore, the Imam during a prayer session had sought help against Jews and Christians. He also sighted the Quran as his source for assertion. Meanwhile, the Singapore Court had reiterated that strict laws are necessary to protect peace and will not allow people to divide on the lines of religion or race.
Zakir Naik
Islamic preacher Zakir Naik was barred from entering Singapore for promoting extremist teachings & separatist comments online. Singaporean authorities noted that he was barred from the country as his teachings were inflammatory and threatened social harmony. Zakir Naik’s comments violated the multicultural, multi ethnic fabric of Singapore, the government noted.
The authorities also observed that in 2020, a 18 year-old teenager was radicalised by listening to Zakir Naik’s speeches online. The indoctrinated youth also aimed at armed violence & terror attack by listening to Zakir Naik’s hatred statements. Thus, the Islamic preacher was banned from the country.
Abdul Somad
Indonesian preacher Abdul Somad Batubara has also been barred from entering Singapore. Somad had publicly promoted extremism and decisive teachings. He had promoted suicide bombings as legitimate & urged for martyrdom. He had also circulated hate comments against Christians. Somad had preached that Muslims should not accept non-Muslims as their leaders, as non-Muslims could conspire to oppress Muslims. He quoted, “slit their throats”, such inflammatory comments could fuel steep violence & rift in the society, thus he was barred from Singapore.
Ismail Menk
Ismail Menk, an Islamic preacher from Zimbabwe was banned from Singapore in 2017 due to his separatist comments. He had outrightly said that it is the biggest sin and crime for a Muslim to wish a non-Muslim Merry Christmas or Happy Deepavali. Singapore, thus once again reiterated that the Government has a responsibility to safeguard social cohesion and religious harmony.
Amir Hamza
Islamic preacher from Bangladesh Amir Hamza had illegally preached to a group of migrant Bangladeshi workers at a dormitory in 2024. He rendered extremist comments that are harmful to Singapore’s communal harmony. He is also said to be an influential figure for the Al Qaeda terror organisation. He used a different passport with a fake name to enter Singapore illegally. However, after police received hints, they arrested Amir Hamza, they arrested him and banned from Singapore.

However, Singapore’s stringent and unequivocal policy has played a pivotal role in keeping the social harmony of the city-state intact. This strict zero-tolerance to radical elements indeed stands out as a testament amid many countries increasingly witnessing hightened scale of radical, violent acts purely on religious basis & indoctrination of innocent minds unravelling at a swift pace.
