Beyond the Flute: Shri Krishna’s actions for Nation First

The “Nation First” perspective of Bhagwan Shri Krishna as depicted in the Mahabharata and the Bhagavad Gita serves as an inspiration for today’s youth and future generations. Shri Krishna stands as a fundamental pillar of the “Nation First” philosophy. He consistently prioritised the collective welfare, righteousness, and sovereignty of the Motherland above personal relationships, ambitions, clan loyalties, and individual emotions.

The following outlines how Krishna exemplified the “Nation First” principle:

Distinguishing Clan Loyalty from National Righteousness

Though Krishna belonged to the Yadav clan, he never placed Yadav superiority over the geopolitical stability, cultural dimensions of civilization, humanity, and the safety and development of Bharatvarsha.

The Downfall of the Yadavas: When his own clan succumbed to Adharma (unrighteousness) and internal pride, Krishna refrained from intervening to save them. He permitted the Yadav civil war to occur, demonstrating that no clan, including his own, surpasses the moral integrity of the nation.

Neutrality in Personal Relationships: Krishna held affection for his cousin Arjuna, yet his counsel to Arjuna was grounded solely in the restoration of Dharma across the Motherland, rather than merely securing a kingdom for his relatives and loved ones.

The Unification of a Divided Motherland

Prior to the Mahabharata war, Bharatvarsha was fragmented into rival kingdoms led by tyrannical rulers. Krishna’s political vision aimed at unifying these states under a singular, righteous governance, known as Dharmarajya.

Dismantling Local Tyrants: He orchestrated the defeat of despots like Kansa (Mathura), Jarasandh (Magadha), and Shishupala (Chedi), as their avarice and cruelty obstructed national unity and oppressed the people.

Establishing Central Ethical Authority: He supported Yudhisthira not out of favoritism but because Yudhisthira possessed the integrity essential for justly ruling a unified nation.

Rashtra Dharma over Personal Emotions

In the Bhagavad Gita, Shri Krishna clearly articulates that the duty towards the collective takes precedence over personal emotional ties.

Guidance to Arjuna: When Arjuna hesitated to fight, seeing his teachers and grandfathers among the enemy, Krishna corrected him. He explained that when the future of a nation is at stake, personal ties must be set aside to protect the innocent, uphold humanity, and safeguard the nation.

War as a Last Resort: Krishna journeyed to Hastinapur as a peace envoy to avert conflict. However, when peace negotiations faltered, he supported a righteous war, emphasizing that national security and justice cannot be sacrificed for an illusory sense of peace.

Directing Actions for Global and Collective Good

In Chapter 3, Verse 20 of the Bhagavad Gita, Krishna introduces the concept of Loksangraha – acting for the maintenance, welfare, and upliftment of the world. He emphasized that a leader’s primary responsibility is to serve as an exemplar for the citizens. He promoted the belief that personal salvation (Moksha) and national duty (Rashtra Dharma) are interconnected; serving the nation selflessly represents a high form of spiritual practice and devotion to the Almighty.

The Strategy of Strategic Relocation (The Dwaraka Shift)

Shri Krishna illustrated that it is essential to relinquish personal pride and regional affiliations in order to ensure the safety and survival of the populace. To clarify, Jarasandh, the oppressive ruler of Magadha, launched 17 attacks on Mathura seeking revenge for Kansa’s death. Although Krishna triumphed over him each time, the ongoing conflicts were exhausting Mathura’s resources and endangering innocent lives. Rather than engaging in an 18th battle simply to uphold royal honor, Krishna chose to move the entire population of Mathura to the coastal city of Dwaraka. This strategic withdrawal earned him the title “Ranchhod.” Krishna prioritized the safety of the public and long-term geopolitical stability over personal military acclaim.

Deconstruction of Toxic Alliances

For a nation to be secure, it is vital to eliminate internal dangers and corrupt power structures. Krishna effectively dismantled alliances that fostered tyranny. Rulers such as Kansa, Jarasandh, Shishupala, and Narkasura had formed a stronghold that oppressed smaller kingdoms. Krishna did not resort to large-scale, destructive wars to defeat them; instead, he employed precise strategies. For instance, he guided Bhima in a one-on-one wrestling match to defeat Jarasandha, thereby eliminating corrupt regimes while minimizing civilian harm. National security occasionally necessitates the strategic removal of corrupt and anti national leaders to avert societal collapse.

The Concept of Yuga – Parivartan (Systemic Transformation)

Krishna’s overarching aim was not merely to install a single king but to transform the political and social landscape of the entire subcontinent. Moving beyond dynastic politics, he recognized that the ruling Kuru dynasty in Hastinapur had become morally compromised. Dhritarashtra was blinded by favoritism, while Duryodhana was motivated by greed. Krishna supported the Pandavas, as they adhered to the rule of law and the welfare of citizens in accordance with Dharma. By placing Yudhisthira on the throne, he ensured that the nation’s governance was founded upon accountability and justice.

Philosophy of Duty without Personal Entanglement (Nishkam Karma)

In the Bhagavad Gita, Krishna redefines the roles of warrior and citizen. He asserts that personal sorrow, guilt, and relationships are secondary to national duty. Arjuna, overwhelmed by emotional attachments and fearful of the guilt associated with killing his kin, was paralyzed. Krishna reminded him that he was not engaged in a personal vendetta; rather, he served as an instrument of justice representing the nation. To abandon the battlefield due to personal emotions would be an act of cowardice, thereby allowing tyranny to dominate the nation.

Here is how his old strategies relate directly to today’s leadership ideas:

Diplomatic Pragmatism: The Upayas & Strategic Flexibility

Krishna was a true expert in being practical. He effectively applied the four Upayas (strategies) from ancient Bharatiya governance—Sama (peaceful resolution), Dama (rewards), Bheda (creating divisions), and Danda (use of power)—and always made sure they served the country’s best interests.

Modern Governance Equivalent: Realpolitik and Multi-Alignment. Today’s countries can’t stick to strict, unrealistic foreign policies. Leaders should first try diplomatic talks (Sama), use trade tactics and sanctions (Dama/Bheda), and only rely on military action (Danda) as a final option.

Radical Accountability: The Yadava Precedent

Krishna’s decision not to defend his own people (the Yadavas) when they acted unlawfully and lost their morals is a prime example of staying true to principles.

Modern Governance Equivalent: Zero-Tolerance for Internal Corruption. A country suffers the most from problems within. Genuine leadership demands upholding laws fairly, even if it means punishing those in your own political group, government, or family.

Today’s youth should learn these values from Bhagwan Krishna to help build the nation, instead of falling into harmful ideologies that can lead to self-destruction, societal harm, and national ruin.
