As part of the continuing rehabilitation efforts for victims of the devastating Wayanad landslides, SevaBharati Kerala has laid foundation stones on June 11 for the construction of five houses at Nathamkuni near Kalpetta in Wayanad district. The houses are being built for families who remain homeless following the disaster.
The housing initiative forms part of a broader humanitarian and rehabilitation programme being undertaken by Sevabharati and supporting organisations.
The State Committee of NGO Sangh Kerala is sponsoring one house, while another has been sponsored by Uthishtata, a Bengaluru-based NGO.
Sevabharati, an RSS inspired organisation, has stated that its objective is to provide shelter to families who continue to remain without permanent housing after the tragedy in Wayanad.
The foundation stone-laying ceremony was attended by RSS functionaries T.D. Jagat Nathkumar, Sajeevan and C.K. Balakrishnan, along with Sevabharati district president K. Sathyan Nair and K.S. Satheeshan.
On the occasion, NGO Sangh Kerala leader Sajeevan handed over the first instalment for one of the houses to Sevabharati.
Sevabharati state organising secretary K.V. Rajeev, M.D. Shyamla, state committee members, P. Satheesh and NGO Sangh state vice-president Gopalakrishnan were also present.
K.G. Satheeshan welcomed the gathering, while V.A. Suresh delivered the vote of thanks.
The initiative comes in the backdrop of the catastrophic landslides that struck Mundakkai and Chooralmala in Wayanad on July 30, 2024, one of the worst natural disasters in Kerala’s recent history. The tragedy claimed 222 lives, injured around 400 people and left nearly 100 persons missing.
Apart from housing, rehabilitation activities are also being expanded through livelihood and skill-support initiatives. A skill development centre in the area is nearing completion, while a tailoring unit has already been launched in Kalpetta to support affected families.
Following the disaster, the Kerala Government undertook a major rehabilitation programme for displaced families. As part of this effort, 178 houses were handed over to beneficiaries in March 2026. The houses being constructed by Sevabharati are intended for families who have not yet received permanent housing.
During the immediate aftermath of the landslides, RSS swayamsevaks were actively involved in relief and rescue operations. Swayasevaks participated in recovering bodies from the debris, assisting survivors, transporting injured victims to hospitals, arranging temporary accommodation and distributing food and essential supplies. Swayamsevaks from RSS, Sevabharati, VHP, BJP and Yuva Morcha also took part in various relief activities carried out in the affected areas.
The latest housing project is being viewed as a continuation of those rehabilitation efforts, aimed at helping affected families rebuild their lives nearly two years after the disaster.
