In a significant move towards aiding the victims of the devastating Wayanad landslides, Desheeya Sevabharati Kerala has announced a comprehensive rehabilitation plan. During the organisation’s annual general body meeting, Sevabharati declared its Wayanad Rehabilitation Scheme, which includes purchasing five acres of land in Muppainad Panchayat to begin constructing houses for displaced victims. The construction is set to begin next month.

Additionally, Sevabharati introduced the Punarjanik Scheme, aimed at providing psychological rehabilitation for those deeply affected by the landslides. This initiative highlights the organization’s commitment not only to the physical reconstruction of lives but also to mental well-being.

Sevabharati also launched an educational scholarship program for students in Wayanad. Scholarships will support education from school to professional college levels. Students can apply for these scholarships through the Sevabharati website: Sevabharathi Keralam.

At the conference, the “Suraksha” handbook, prepared by the Sevabharati Kerala Apath Seva Team, was released. T.S. Kalyana Raman, Managing Director of Kalyan Jewellers, inaugurated the event, while the keynote address was delivered by Rajkumar Marate, Akhil Bharatiya Sahaseva Pramukh of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). The event was presided over by Dr. Renjith Vijayahari, President of Sevabharati Kerala, with RSS Uttar Kerala Pranth Pracharak A. Vinod delivering the Seva Message.

During the meeting, a new 28-member executive committee was elected, including Dr. Renjith Vijayahari as president, Dr. Sreeram Sankar as general secretary, and PR Rajimol as treasurer.

Sevabharati’s commitment, along with the efforts of another NGO, Highange Rural Development Society (HRDS), which has offered to build 500 houses in Wayanad, has eased the burden on the Kerala state government. With the total loss of houses estimated at under 260, these initiatives will allow the government to redirect funds towards developing critical infrastructure, such as roads, bridges, schools, and hospitals.

The state government is expected to revise its financial demands for Wayanad relief activities, as NGOs have stepped in to support housing reconstruction, enabling a more focused approach to long-term development needs.
