Varanasi: A high-stakes counter-terror operation unfolded in Varanasi on April 15, 2026, as multiple security agencies converged on the residence and clinic of a local paediatrician, Dr Arif Ansari. The coordinated raid carried out by the Uttar Pradesh Anti-Terrorism Squad, Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad, and the Intelligence Bureau is part of an expanding investigation into suspected terror funding networks with possible cross-border links.

The operation was conducted in the densely populated Pathani Tola/Nawapura locality under Adampur police station limits. Officials searched both the doctor’s residence and his clinic, spending several hours combing through documents, digital records, and personal belongings. The presence of multiple agencies underscored the seriousness of the intelligence inputs that triggered the raid.
Focus shifts to alleged ISI links
According to preliminary inputs, investigators are probing suspected connections between Dr. Ansari’s family and handlers linked to Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI). The suspicion centres particularly on the doctor’s 20-year-old son, Abu Bakr, who is preparing for the NEET medical entrance examination.
Officials believe that online communication channels may have been used to establish contact with operatives across the border. While no official confirmation has been made regarding the extent of these links, agencies are treating the matter with urgency, given the potential national security implications.
Abu Bakr was reportedly questioned for several hours, ranging from six to nine hours, by investigators. Sources indicate that the interrogation focused on his online activity, social media interactions, financial transactions, and any possible exposure to radical content or networks.
Authorities are also examining whether he was knowingly involved or may have been influenced or manipulated through digital platforms, a pattern increasingly seen in recent terror-related cases.
Electronic devices seized for forensic analysis
During the search, officials seized multiple electronic devices, including laptops, mobile phones, and storage media. These have been sent for detailed forensic examination to trace communication trails, encrypted messages, and any financial transactions that could point to funding channels or operational planning.
Investigators are particularly interested in uncovering whether these devices contain evidence of coordination with external handlers or any reconnaissance related to potential targets.
As of now, no arrests have been officially announced in connection with the raid. Authorities have maintained that the investigation is ongoing and that conclusions will depend on the outcome of forensic analysis and further interrogation.
