Hindu Munnani petitions Tamil Nadu CEO over Namaz in a private school, alleging GO violation

A political controversy has erupted in Tamil Nadu after Hindu Munnani accused the DMK government of selectively enforcing its own Government Order banning religious activities in schools. The organisation has approached the Chief Electoral Officer, citing multiple incidents of Namaz, Iftar events, and election prayers held in educational institutions.

Hindu Munnani, citing recent religious events where Muslims conducted Namaz at private schools and at a corporation school on Noyyal Street in Tirupur, alleged a clear violation of the MCC and its State GO that banned any religion-based activities in private schools. A question raised by Hindu Munnani was whether the GO is meant for Hindu-run private schools and not for Madrasas or Christian-run convents.

The Tamil Nadu Government order dated March 2 restricted private schools from hosting programmes of a religious or political nature on their premises. It amended the Tamil Nadu Private Schools (Regulation) Rules, 2023, in this regard and included clauses to restrict activities by any external person, association, or organisation.

Hindu Munnani’s state media coordinator has written a letter to TN Chief Electoral Officer Archana Patnaik, bringing her attention to the alleged blatant violation by the DMK government in allowing Namaz at a corporation school on Noyyal Street in Tirupur.

Hindu Munnani, in its letter dated March 16, stated that the school is run by the Tirupur Corporation. When its GO clearly states that religion-based events are not permitted in schools, how was Namaz allowed during Ramadan in the school premises?

In the neighbouring Coimbatore district, allegedly flouting GO rules, special Namaz prayers were held on March 21 at Karamadai Pasupathiappa Patasala and Noyyal Government School.

A large number of Muslims took part in these events. Hindu Munnani questioned whether, just because the DMK is a patron of minority communities, its GO would not apply to such events in private and government schools. Hindu Munnani has urged the government not to allow such events in future in order to respect its own orders.

Hindu Munnani, in a post, questioned the government as to why it has gone against its own GO issued some time ago. It stated: “The government has allowed the holding of an Iftar party due to the Ramadan festival at Don Bosco School, a private minority institution in the Chennai Harbour Assembly constituency. It is another appeasement attempt to win their votes in the Assembly elections. We have presented a petition to the NS Muthiyalpet police station seeking immediate action.”

In another incident, “a special prayer for elections” was organised on March 21 at Pope Memorial School at Chitralayam near Sayarpuram. It was a night-long prayer for the forthcoming elections, seeking the success of secular parties and allegedly the defeat of the BJP-led alliance. Pastor JG Samuel Immanuvel and S Anand Samuel, John Thomas conducted the prayers. The invite called Christians to attend in large numbers with families and the public, irrespective of religion and caste.
