Largest oil refinery; Potential to disrupt global energy supply chain

The Valero Port Arthur Refinery is one of the largest oil refineries of the United States, located on the Texas Gulf Coast. The refinery has more than 770 employees that produces more than 4,35,000 barrels of oil per day. This includes extraction of gasoline, diesel and jet fuel from heavy sour crude oil. Given the large scale oil produced and supplied from the Texas oil refinery, any disruption in terms of production or prolonged closure of operation will haunt the global energy supply chain. The loss of oil and halt of operations will indeed disrupt global energy security.

Global energy security is hitherto under threat as an impact of the conflict in West Asia. There is a severe crisis for LPG and other energy sources across the globe. The explosion at Texas oil refinery might further escalate the energy crisis amid West Asia conflict. Also, any slump in the energy supply, might spike the energy prices across the globe which is already fluctuating and escalating as an impact of the West Asia conflict. Thus, the explosion at the Texas oil refinery can be deemed as an additional spine on the global energy supply chain and oil prices, impacting the lives of common people across the globe.

Explosion triggers climate & health risks

Beyond dwindling energy security, the explosion at the Texas oil refinery might also escalate the climate risks in an era where climate catastrophes are paramount and spiking beyond control. The US officials asserted that air quality monitoring is underway to determine whether toxic substances have been released into the surrounding area. The Texas State Department has also issued the shelter-in-place advisory or protocol to the residents in the region. People are advised to stay at home and avoid unnecessary commutation until further notice and until it is deemed as safe to resume normal activities. The contamination of air will lead to pollution and associated health risks thus further fueling the intensity of climate catastrophes.
