Aimed at enhancing connectivity, promoting tourism to far flung remote areas and strengthening emergency support for people of the Union Territory (UT) of Ladakh, Lieutenant Governor Kavinder Gupta on December 12, inaugurated the newly revised and expanded B-3 Helicopter Services. Ladakh covers a large landmass and it may take hours together to travel by road to reach many remote areas and that often acts as a deterrent for tourists. In case of medical emergencies too, travelling by road can lead to precious hours being lost and helicopter services can be a quick remedy to address the problems.

Recognising Ladakh’s vast geographical spread, harsh terrain, and challenging weather conditions, Gupta said that improved air connectivity is not merely a convenience but a necessity for many residents. The revised subsidised fares and expanded routes, including Leh–Kargil, Leh–Padum, Leh–Lingshad, Leh–Dibling, Leh–Nyerak, Leh–Diskit, and Leh–Turtuk—will provide faster, safer, and more affordable travel for both locals and tourists, he said. In fact, it can take up to 10 to 12 hours from Leh to travel to some of these destinations. Besides, some road stretches are not in a very good shape and make for tiring as also cumbersome driving.

Speaking on the occasion, Gupta emphasised that the new services will be a lifeline for medical emergencies, especially during the winter months when several road routes remain closed due to heavy snowfall. The helicopter services will ensure the timely evacuation of patients, quick transportation of essential supplies, and enhanced access to administrative services in far-flung villages. Presently, Ladakh remains cut off from mainland India during some period in winter months as road leading from Srinagar passing through Jozila pass gets closed. This may change after a couple of years when the Jozila tunnel is completed, ensuring 365x24x7 connectivity round the year. As such, the subsidised helicopter services are a lifeline for people of Ladakh.

Highlighting the vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the LG said that the government is committed to accelerating development in border regions by improving connectivity, strengthening infrastructure and expanding opportunities for youth and local communities. The upgraded helicopter services reflect this commitment and are expected to significantly boost Ladakh’s tourism potential by enabling smoother access to remote destinations known for their natural beauty and cultural heritage.

Padum in Zanskar area of Kargil is a virgin unexplored area hugely popular with foreign tourists who prefer hiking in these high mountains. The helicopter services to this area can provide a significant boost to economic activities as the driving conditions on this road are very difficult.

The LG extended his appreciation to the civil aviation authorities, district administration, and all stakeholders involved in operationalising the initiative. He added that the improved aviation facilities will contribute to economic growth, generate employment, and ensure better integration of remote habitations with the district headquarters.

With the launch of these services, Ladakh takes another major step toward a future of greater accessibility, enhanced tourism and stronger emergency support systems.

Chief Secretary Pawan Kotwal also highlighted the growing demand from the people of Ladakh, particularly from the Zanskar and Singge-Lalok regions, for reliable helicopter services. Particularly during the winter months when surface connectivity remains disrupted due to heavy snowfall. He informed that, to address such emergency requirements and medical exigencies, helicopter services are being made available and can be availed by citizens through an online booking system.

Among those present during the event were Commissioner/Secretary of Civil Aviation L. Franklin; Administrative Secretary Rudra Goud, Deputy Commissioner of Leh Romil Singh Dong, SSP Leh Shree Raam R. Besides, officials from Pawan Hans and the civil aviation sector and other senior officers of the UT administration were also present on the occasion.
