RANCHI: Hundreds of people take it to the streets after unknown miscreants vandalised a Shivlinga in Chaibasa of Jharkhand on Friday evening, November 1, triggering outrage among the local Hindu community who later jammed the road and halted traffic.
The incident came to light after one of the devotees visited the Neelkanth temple near Mochi Shahi area of Jaintgarh of West Singhbhum district on Friday evening. He later informed other people about the vandalism act. As the news spread in the locality, hundreds of locals staged a strong protest against the incident, demanding immediate arrest of the culprits involved in the provoking act.
The protestors jammed the Jaintgarh’s main road by burning tyre and raised slogans against the audacious attempt made to disrupt the peace in the area. A police team too reached the protest site after learning about the incident and assured the agitated villagers for prompt action into the matter.
A one-day bandh has been called in Jaitgarh on Saturday in protest of the incident. Shops have been kept close and traffic is halted on the main road. The incident has alerted the administration who is now keeping a close watch on the situation.
Meanwhile Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Member of Parliament Geeta Koda too reached the spot and demanded action against the accused. “Unknown miscreants have vandalised the murti of Bhagwan Shiva, we demand strict action against the culprits,” said Koda.

It is noteworthy that this is not the first time that an incident aimed at disrupting the communal harmony has come to the fore from the state and incident of similar nature have emerged from separate places of the state in recent times.
Earlier in a similar incident unknown miscreants had also installed an Islamic flag near the Durga temple premises in Giridih on September 10, charging the atmosphere in the area.
The incident had occurred in Keshwari village of Sariya police station limits of Giridih, where unknown elements installed an Islamic flag in the temple premises, triggering an outrage among the residents. The said flag was later uprooted by a police team.

In another related development, tension erupted under Chirkunda police station limits after a few people threw a piece of cooked meat near a Hanuman temple in Babudangal area on the night of September 09.
The incident sparked a massive outrage among the locals who gathered on the spot in large numbers on the next morning, demanding action against the accused. Notably, incidents of communal nature in separate areas of the state has kept the police and the administration on its toes in recent months. State assembly elections are scheduled to be held in Jharkhand in November 13 and 20.
