In the early hours of Saturday (August 17), the Sabarmati Express (Train No. 19168) derailed in a block section between Kanpur and Bhimsen stations in Uttar Pradesh, sending shockwaves across the region. Fortunately, in this case, no injuries were reported at the site.

Responding swiftly to the derailment, Indian Railways dispatched buses to the location to transport the stranded passengers to Kanpur, ensuring their safety and minimising the disruption caused by the incident. Initial reports from the train driver suggest that the derailment may have been triggered by a boulder striking the engine, which led to significant damage to the engine’s cattle guard. However, the exact cause of the accident remains under investigation by Indian Railways.

In the wake of the Sabarmati Express derailment, Indian Railways has issued emergency helpline numbers for concerned stations, including PRYJ, CNB, MZP, FTP, NYN, CAR, ETW, and HRS/ASM, to assist passengers and their families. As the investigation continues, more details are expected to emerge, shedding light on the factors that led to this potentially dangerous situation.

This derailment comes on the heels of several railway incidents in recent months. Just last month, a passenger train derailed in Bihar, resulting in multiple injuries, while earlier this year, a tragic collision in Odisha claimed the lives of over 280 passengers. These incidents have put immense pressure on the Indian Railways to address safety concerns and prevent such accidents from recurring.
