India’s EV sales hit record 3.33 lakh units in September, a 74 percent jump: FADA

India’s electric vehicle market recorded its highest-ever monthly retail sales in September, with 3.33 lakh EVs sold, marking a 74 per cent year-on-year increase. Electric two-wheelers and passenger vehicles emerged as the biggest drivers of the record growth

The Indian electric vehicle (EV) market reached a new milestone in September, with retail sales climbing to 3,33,634 units, a 74 per cent increase compared with the same month last year, according to data released by the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA).

The strong performance came as EV penetration across vehicle categories rose to around 13 per cent in September, compared with nearly 10 per cent in September last year. The latest figures indicate that electric mobility is steadily moving beyond an emerging segment and becoming a mainstream choice for Indian consumers.

The growth was particularly strong in the mass market segments, with electric two-wheelers and passenger vehicles both recording their highest ever monthly retail sales. Electric three-wheelers also maintained their dominant position within their segment, while electric commercial vehicles recorded a sharp year-on-year increase despite a month-on-month decline.

September sets new record for EV retail sales

According to FADA, September marked an important point for India’s electric mobility sector as overall EV sales not only grew substantially over the previous year but also crossed a new monthly record. FADA President Sai Giridhar said the performance reflected a combination of festive demand, improving economics of EV ownership, a wider range of models and continued policy support.

He said the combination of these factors was increasingly turning electric vehicles from an alternative option into a serious consideration for a growing number of buyers. The September numbers also suggest that demand for EVs is becoming less dependent on subsidies alone. Falling running costs, increasing model choices and greater consumer awareness are contributing to the expansion of the market.

Policy measures such as the PM E-DRIVE scheme, along with various state-level EV policies and incentives, have also supported the development of the electric mobility ecosystem.

Electric two wheelers drive mass market growth

Electric two-wheelers remained the biggest contributor to India’s EV sales growth in September. Retail sales of electric scooters and motorcycles reached an all-time high of 2,07,314 units during the month.

The figure represented an 88.67 per cent year-on-year increase and a 13.16 per cent rise from August. The performance highlights the growing acceptance of electric two-wheelers among Indian consumers, particularly in urban and semi-urban markets.

The penetration of EVs in the overall two wheeler market also increased significantly. Electric models accounted for around 11.6 per cent of two wheeler sales in September, compared with 8.2 per cent during the same month last year.

The segment has emerged as one of the most competitive areas of India’s EV industry, with manufacturers offering products across different price points. Lower operating costs compared with conventional petrol-powered two-wheelers are also making EVs increasingly attractive for daily commuters and commercial users.

The strong month-on-month growth during September also points to the impact of the festive season, when automobile purchases traditionally increase across India.

Passenger EV sales reach new high

Electric passenger vehicles also posted a record performance in September. Retail sales rose to 36,108 units, the highest monthly figure recorded for the segment. Passenger EV sales increased by 94.56 per cent year-on-year and 17.63 per cent compared with August. The segment’s EV penetration increased to approximately 8.5 per cent, compared with 5.7 per cent in September last year.

The rapid growth in passenger EV sales comes as consumers gain access to a wider selection of electric cars across different price categories. Automakers have also expanded their EV portfolios, offering models aimed at both mass-market and premium buyers.

The improvement in charging infrastructure in major cities, coupled with increasing awareness about running costs, has further contributed to the adoption of electric cars. The near doubling of monthly sales compared with last year indicates that electric passenger vehicles are gaining ground at a faster pace than they were previously.

Electric three wheelers maintain strong position

Electric three-wheelers continued to show strong penetration in the Indian market. Retail sales of electric three-wheelers reached 86,024 units in September, registering a 40 per cent year-on-year increase. Sales also grew 7.74 per cent compared with August. EV penetration in the three-wheeler category remained particularly high at 64.9 per cent, making it one of the most electrified vehicle segments in the country.

The high adoption of electric three-wheelers is closely linked to their use in passenger transport and last-mile connectivity. For drivers and fleet operators, lower running and maintenance costs can make electric three wheelers economically attractive for regular commercial use.

The segment’s high penetration also demonstrates that electrification is not limited to private vehicle ownership. Commercial and shared mobility are becoming important components of India’s transition towards electric transportation.

Commercial EVs post sharp yearly growth

Electric commercial vehicle sales stood at 4,188 units in September. While sales declined by 10.9 per cent compared with August, the segment recorded a substantial 158 per cent year-on-year increase.

EV penetration in commercial vehicles also rose to around 4 per cent, compared with 2.16 per cent in September last year. The sharp annual increase indicates growing interest in electric commercial mobility, although the segment remains considerably smaller than electric two-wheelers and three-wheelers.

Commercial vehicle operators typically assess vehicles on the basis of total operating costs, vehicle utilisation and charging availability. As these factors improve, electric commercial vehicles could see greater adoption in logistics, delivery and urban transportation applications.

EV adoption moves beyond subsidy driven growth

The latest FADA data indicates that India’s EV transition is increasingly being supported by market demand, rather than being driven solely by government incentives. The combination of lower running costs, improving vehicle technology, expanding product choices and policy support is helping electric vehicles gain wider acceptance.

The festive season also provided an additional boost to automobile demand in September. However, the year-on-year growth across multiple EV categories suggests that the increase is part of a broader trend rather than a one-month phenomenon.

The continued rise in EV penetration will also depend on factors such as charging infrastructure, battery costs, financing options, product availability and consumer confidence in long-term ownership. With electric two-wheelers leading the market and passenger vehicles rapidly expanding, September’s record sales provide a strong indication that India’s electric mobility sector is entering a new phase of growth.

As more consumers and businesses consider the total cost of vehicle ownership rather than only the upfront purchase price, electric vehicles are likely to become an increasingly important part of India’s automobile market.
