Prime Minister Modi has flagged off the metro rail service for Phase 2 of the Chennai Metro Rail Project, built at a cost of around Rs. 4,900 crore. The Poonamallee–Porur corridor features a unique 3.7-km double-decker structure, with advanced signalling systems designed to support driverless operations.

PM Modi, who is on a day’s visit to Tamil Nadu, attended the inauguration of the second phase of the Metro project.

PM Modi and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay jointly flagged off the new metro services and travelled on a train along the route. After flagging off the inaugural rail service, PM Modi and others travelled from Porur Bypass station to Poonamallee Bypass station and back. Tamil Nadu Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar also attended the ceremony for the new metro rail project.

The 15-km stretch connects Poonamallee Bypass and Vadapalani through 11 elevated stations. This corridor includes a 3.7-km double-decker section that will not operate on Sundays. Its signalling system has been designed to support driverless operations.

Inauguration of the Poonamallee-Vadapalani stretch of Chennai Metro Phase-2 ensures:

Faster, more convenient daily travel for commuters.

Better connectivity between Chennai’s fast-growing western suburbs and the city centre.
