When the SIU was making the arrests, their family members objected and entered into a verbal altercation with the police team and SIU sleuths. Their relatives alleged that the arrests were made without giving prior notice and that they were taken to the police station in Thanjavur. They protested in front of the Thanjavur East Police Station and later withdrew their agitation after being persuaded by the police.

The September 29 raids were carried out under the supervision of Thanjavur City DSP Charles, with six police inspectors leading separate teams. The searches are part of inquiries into the alleged activities and links of the six persons with the organisation.
Police claimed that the six were actively involved in the activities of HuT, whose aim is to establish a global Islamic State and Caliphate, including in India, by overthrowing democratically elected governments ‘through jihad and terrorist activities involving citizens’.
HuT has been declared a terrorist organisation under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act by the Ministry of Home Affairs in 2024. Hizb ut-Tahrir (HuT) is an international Sunni Islamist political organisation founded in Jerusalem in 1953 by Taqi al-Din al-Nabhani. Its stated long-term objective is to unite Muslims across countries under a single Islamic Caliphate governed by Sharia law.
The NIA has filed multiple chargesheets against arrested operatives for conspiring to promote secessionism, enforce a Sharia-based draft constitution and carry out terror acts.
