Hundreds of schools across Northern Ireland and Scotland received bomb threat emails on October 21, triggering closures, evacuations and widespread disruption to educational institutions. The threatening messages, signed ‘Allahu Akbar’ and referring to the introduction of Sharia law, prompted urgent police investigations across the United Kingdom.

The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) said up to 300 educational institutions had received the emails, which were believed to have originated outside the UK. Authorities described the messages as containing a generalised threat, while police forces treated them as an apparent hoax.

Paul Givan, Stormont’s education minister, said the emails appeared to have come from individuals identifying themselves as Islamists and threatening that Sharia law would be introduced into the country.

According to reports, the messages claimed that an explosive device had been placed inside a building, causing considerable alarm among school authorities, staff, parents and pupils. Several institutions subsequently closed as the authorities assessed the situation.

The incident comes amid continuing concerns over security, political extremism and left-Islamist unrest in parts of Europe. However, authorities have not established a connection between the school threats and the wider unrest.

Glasgow reports threats at 148 sites as schools evacuate

Scotland also reported a wave of threatening messages targeting educational institutions. Police Scotland confirmed that similar emails had been sent to a number of schools, while Glasgow City Council said it was aware of threatening communications received by 148 sites across the city.

Some Glasgow schools were evacuated during the morning of October 21. Pupils subsequently returned to their classrooms, and schools were not placed under lockdown, according to a city council spokesperson.

The timing added to the disruption in Scotland, where most schools were scheduled to remain closed for the half-term break. Glasgow schools had reopened on October 21, leaving several institutions dealing with the threats as pupils returned.

In the Scottish Borders, schools that were closed for an in-service training day also reported receiving the threatening messages. In Edinburgh, staff at some schools working on training days without pupils present were instructed to leave the premises.

A Scottish Government spokesperson confirmed that threatening messages had been sent to schools across Scotland and elsewhere in the UK. Police Scotland was investigating the incident and treating the emails as a hoax.

Northern Ireland authorities launch urgent investigation

Givan said the advice to schools in Northern Ireland was that the threats were not considered viable at that stage, despite the disruption and distress caused by the messages.

He condemned the disruption to education, noting that some schools had been forced to close after receiving threats through official communication channels. He also expressed disappointment that pupils’ education had been interrupted.

The PSNI launched an urgent investigation to establish the origin of the emails and assess their credibility. Police leadership also met representatives of the region’s Education Authority on October 21 to discuss the situation.

The Education Authority confirmed that several schools across Northern Ireland had received threatening emails and said it was coordinating with the PSNI. It issued communications to schools and continued providing guidance to school leaders.

The incident has disrupted educational activities across multiple regions, prompting police investigations and precautionary measures at affected institutions. Authorities continued assessing the messages as schools and families awaited further information.
