Tamil Nadu: Hindu Munnani condemns police inaction after threats by some Muslims during Ganesh celebrations

Hindu Munnani has condemned alleged police inaction and restrictions during Bhagwan Vinayaka murti immersion processions in Tamil Nadu, highlighting incidents in Aruppukottai, Chennai, Karur, Theni and other locations.

Hindu Munnani has condemned TVK government inaction during several Vinayaka murti immersion processions across Tamil Nadu in September 2026, alleging that Muslim men intruded into a procession, objected to slogans and issued threats in Aruppukottai, while police imposed route restrictions and other conditions on Hindu devotees. Hindu Munnani has also raised questions over similar incidents reported in Chennai, Karur and Theni, alleging that such actions indicate a pattern of restrictions on Hindu religious festivals.

On September 20, at the Ice House junction and certain streets surrounding the mosque, the areas had been ‘classified as highly sensitive areas’ by the police. Barricades were erected and organisers were instructed to follow an alternative route instead of taking the procession through the restricted streets.

Hindu Munnani opposed the restriction and insisted on taking the Ganesh procession through the route that had been blocked by the police. When they attempted to cross the barricades, the situation turned into a confrontation, following which several members, including Gurukulam Rajesh and Manali Damu, were detained and released in the night.

Hindu Munnani argued why the presence of a mosque should result in a Hindu religious procession being treated as a security-sensitive issue and its route being restricted.

Advocate Kutralanathan questioned the police whether they should arrest the Muslims who allegedly threatened to explode bombs if ‘Bharat Mata ki Jai’ was chanted.

A total of 2,054 Vinayagar murtis (around 2,500 including wider suburban jurisdictions) were officially immersed across Chennai following the Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations in September 2026. Over 1,500 large Ganesha murtis were immersed across Coimbatore city and rural waterbodies, including Kurichi Tank and Singanallur Lake.

Hindu Munnani State President Kadeswara C Subrmaniam has condemned the police for standing mute spectators when a group of Muslim men intruded into a Ganesh murti immersion procession, allegedly issued threats and behaved in an intimidatory manner. The police did not do anything to prevent them, which is highly condemnable, he said, alleging that it showed the TVK government’s minority appeasement.

On September 15, Vinayagar murti immersion was held in Aruppukottai. Police permitted the procession after imposing conditions such as no drum beating while passing the mosque and church areas en route. The cadre raised slogans such as Om Ganesha, Jai Ganesha, Bharat Mata ki Jai, Jai Kali, Om Kali, etc., when the procession was moving. A group of Muslims allegedly trespassed into the procession and objected to the sloganeering. They started assaulting Hindu Munnani functionaries while also creating a ruckus. However, the police, who were mandated to provide protection to the procession and the people participating, stood in a stoic condition.

Subrmaniam said, “We have identified five youths who were indulging in attempting to assault and threatening our functionaries. They said, ‘We will cut you into pieces’, directing [the threat at] festival committee in-charge Sivasmi. The police, instead of detaining them, pacified them and took them away only to be freed safely. Their attitude is condemnable.

“The encroaching act of Muslims in our procession is a part of conspiracy to foment communal conflict in the area and would be a reason in coming years to deny permission to our events. These incidents happened in front of the police force, revealing how bold and unafraid of policemen they are. They think their community and the government would take care of them whatever they do to Hindus.”

Hindu Munnani said the entire episode has gone viral on social media, but the police have kept silent. The organisation said the events give a warning that Islamic fundamentalism is raising its head in Tamil Nadu. The NIA and other Central agencies should take note of it and conduct a probe, it said.

Police knew these fundamentalist religious bigots would create trouble, which is why they denied permission to women and children in the procession. Now it raises a question: why did they not act before they did? TVK wants to harvest Muslim votes in the bypolls to be held soon. Hindu Munnani condemned the Aruppukottai incident and urged the police and government to take appropriate measures, especially the Chief Minister, who is holding the Home portfolio.

Hindu Munnani immediately urged the police to arrest them to ensure the safety of people in the procession.

In another incident, a 44-year-old MTC driver died after being assaulted by a group following a rift over dancing on the street during a Vinayaka Chaturthi procession at Ramapuram in Chennai in the early hours of September 15. This shows the poor law and order in the state.

In Karur, at Angalamman Temple in Nerur, police and the Tahsildar entered at midnight and removed the Vinayaka murtis forcefully. Vangal Police Inspector reportedly used abusive language against the organisers of the festival.

At Theni, the police stopped the functionaries of Indu Makkal Katchi who were attending the immersion procession. This led to a tense situation in the area.

In Tharangambadi, the Ganesh murtis were taken in a grand procession and immersed in the sea.

However, the objections to Hindu festivals by non-Hindus, particularly certain sections of Muslims, is a grave threat, and threats such as ‘will bomb you’, ‘we will do whatever we wish’, ‘mosque area’, ‘church road’, and Muslims-majority area, along with ‘no drums’, are all more than excuses, they appear to be well-designed and pushed into society to normalise the separation and claiming exclusive benefits under the guise of secularism and threatening politicians as a vote bank that decides political power struggles.

The previous DMK government, and the current TVK government led by actor-turned-politician C Joseph Vijay, are also following the same steps to appease Muslims who are pushing their agenda day by day, where they blame the DMK and praise the TVK at their convenience.
