Guru Amar Das Ji, one of the most influential figures in the early Sikh tradition, dedicated his life to challenging social discrimination and promoting the dignity and equality of every individual. His teachings emphasised that devotion to God must go hand in hand with selfless service and compassion for humanity.

One of his most significant contributions was the strengthening of the Langar tradition, through which people from all sections of society could sit together and share a meal without distinctions of caste, status or social standing. His principle of “Pehle Pangat, Paache Sangat” first sit in the community meal, then join the congregation embodied the idea that spiritual fellowship should be rooted in equality.
Guru Amar Das Ji also made an enduring contribution to Sikh spiritual literature through the composition of Anand Sahib, a revered hymn that speaks of spiritual joy, devotion and union with the Divine.
