Mumbai: Reliance Industries and British aero-engine major Rolls-Royce have announced a strategic partnership to jointly develop and manufacture an indigenous, sovereign combat-aircraft engine for India’s Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) programme. This marks a significant expansion and a milestone in the Atmanirbhar Bharat, defence indigenisation and Make-in-India vision. It also testifies India’s consistent effort and race in the path of defence modernisation and gaining strategic edge in the advanced or frontier military technology to consolidate national security.

Reliance, Rolls-Royce target indigenous AMCA engine

The two companies said that they will explore the formation of a dedicated Aerospace Gas Turbine Complex in India, envisioned as a centre of excellence for advanced power and propulsion technologies. The proposed facility is expected to build capabilities across the entire aero-engine lifecycle, including design, development, manufacturing, testing, production and through-life support.

The partnership brings together Rolls-Royce’s long-standing expertise in advanced propulsion and Reliance’s industrial, technological, manufacturing and execution capabilities. However, the companies did not disclose financial details or the structure of the proposed partnership.

Anant Ambani, Executive Director of Reliance Industries, said India’s strategic autonomy requires sovereign capabilities in critical technologies. He said that the partnership would seek to create an indigenous aero-engine ecosystem that could eventually make India self-reliant and globally competitive in advanced propulsion and military technologies.

Rolls-Royce CEO Tufan Erginbilgiç described the collaboration as a major milestone towards building a robust and self-reliant aerospace ecosystem in India.

The announcement is significant because the indigenous engine for the AMCA remains one of the most challenging elements of India’s fifth-generation fighter programme. India is looking for a high-thrust engine for the fifth generation and most advanced version of the aircraft. In this direction, the Reliance Rolls Royce partnership marks a significant milestone.

The Reliance-Rolls-Royce announcement, however, does not represent a government selection or an engine contract. It is a strategic intent to explore cooperation and establish industrial capabilities in India. The AMCA programme offers an opportunity to overcome technological dependence and develop an end-to-end domestic capability in combat aviation. It also signifies a benchmark in private partnership in the defence sector, which the government pushes persistently.

The indigenously developed AMCA is also expected to form a crucial component of the Indian Air Force’s long-term modernisation plans as it seeks to strengthen its fighter fleet and replace ageing aircraft.

For India, the strategic importance extends beyond the AMCA itself. A successful indigenous combat-engine programme would represent a major technological leap, strengthen defence self-reliance and potentially open the door for India to emerge as a global player in advanced military technology, with credible global & private partnerships.
