Not all Heroes go Viral: Gen Z should know Lt Col Vikrant Prasher’s Shaurya Chakra Story

Lt Col Vikrant Prasher of 10 PARA (Special Forces) emerged as a real-life role model for Gen Z through his extraordinary courage during a high-risk 2018 counter-terror operation in J&K. Leading a small team into a crowded marketplace, he neutralised a high-value terrorist at close range while ensuring the safe extraction of his men without civilian casualties, earning the prestigious Shaurya Chakra for his bravery and leadership.

In counter-terror operations, the presence of civilians can turn even a precisely planned mission into a nightmare. A single miscalculation can result in civilian casualties, allow a terrorist to escape or put an entire assault team at risk. It was in such a high-pressure situation in August 2018 that Lieutenant Colonel Vikrant Prasher of 10 PARA (Special Forces) was tasked with tracking down a high-value terrorist commander in J&K.

According to the account of the operation, intelligence had pinpointed the terrorist’s location inside a crowded marketplace. A conventional cordon-and-search operation carried the risk of alerting the target and exposing civilians to danger. The challenge was therefore not simply to locate and neutralise the terrorist, but to do so while keeping the operation tightly controlled in a heavily populated area. Prasher led a small team of Special Forces personnel towards the target.

The operation demanded extreme situational awareness. Moving through a crowded civilian environment, the team had to maintain concealment while closing in on the suspected terrorist. Any premature movement could have alerted the target and triggered a violent confrontation in the middle of the marketplace.

The situation eventually erupted into a close-range firefight. With civilians caught in the chaos, Prasher faced a rapidly changing battlefield in which hesitation could have allowed the terrorist to escape and indiscriminate firing could have caused innocent lives to be lost.

The officer engaged the high-value terrorist and successfully neutralised him. The operation did not end with the elimination of the target. The team still had to withdraw from an area where armed adversaries were firing and civilians were attempting to flee. Prasher ensured that his team was safely extracted from the danger zone.

The reported absence of civilian casualties was particularly significant given the location and circumstances of the encounter.

The operation demonstrated the difficult balance involved in counter-terror missions in densely populated areas: overwhelming speed and precision must be matched by restraint and an uncompromising focus on protecting innocent lives.

For his courage and leadership during the operation, Lieutenant Colonel Vikrant Prasher was awarded the Shaurya Chakra, one of India’s peacetime gallantry awards. The citation recognised the exceptional courage displayed during the high-risk mission and the officer’s ability to lead his team under intense enemy fire.
