Europe’s relentless and catastrophic heatwaves are escalating with fatal ramifications across the continent. On August 6, Thursday, temperatures breached beyond 40°C in several countries, setting Austria’s highest-ever temperature record and placing Italy’s entire network of 27 monitored cities under the highest heat alert. From drought-hit rivers and strained nuclear power plants to wildfires and rising health risks, the extreme heatwave is increasingly disrupting life and critical infrastructure across the continent.
The intensifying heatwave underscores a broader climate trend. Europe is warming roughly twice as fast as the global average and has been identified as the world’s fastest-warming continent. Scientists warn that climate change is making heatwaves longer, more frequent and more intense. Beyond immediate health concerns, the consequences are spreading across agriculture, energy production, transport, water supplies and economic activity.
Italy’s Health Ministry has placed all 27 cities covered by its national heat surveillance system under a red alert on August 6, Thursday. This is the first time this year that the entire network of monitored cities have simultaneously reached the highest warning level.
The alert stretches from Trieste and Bolzano in the north to Palermo and Cagliari in the south. This prolonged extreme temperatures signals a serious health risk, specifically to the vulnerable groups such as older people, those with chronic illnesses and children. Authorities have thus urged the residents and tourists to avoid direct sunlight during the hottest hours, remain indoors where possible and stay hydrated.
In Genoa, people aged 65 and above can access museums and libraries free of charge during the hottest parts of the day as a shelter from the heatwave. Rome has extended its programme offering free screenings in air-conditioned cinemas until August 14, as a tool to cope up with the destructive heatwaves. Evening opening hours have also been extended at major landmarks including the Colosseum and Pantheon, with cooling mist fans and additional medical stations installed at the Colosseum, to escape the heat.
The heat is also intensifying drought pressures in Italy. Piedmont, centred around Turin, has declared a state of emergency over drought and wildfire risks, while more than 100 towns in Piedmont and Lombardy are facing water supply difficulties. Farmers have reported declining crop yields, accelerated grape ripening and a 10 per cent fall in milk production as livestock struggle with heat stress.
The latest heatwave has also been linked to several suspected heat-related deaths in Italy, highlighting the growing health risks associated with prolonged and soaring temperatures.
The heatwave has shifted eastward after weeks of extreme temperatures and destructive wildfires in Western Europe. Austria recorded its highest temperature ever on August 5, Wednesday, when the mercury reached 41.2°C in Bad Deutsch-Altenburg, near the Slovak border.
The record came amid severe drought conditions. Rainfall across Austria between January 1 and June 30 was 27 per cent, below the long-term national average, while some eastern regions received only half their usual rainfall. Climatologists said that some parts of the country were experiencing exceptionally dry conditions not seen since the late 19th century.
Hungary is also facing an even more immediate threat to its power supply. Record-low water levels in the Danube have sharply affected the country’s only nuclear power plant, which relies on river water to cool its reactors. Operators reduced output to around 10 per cent of normal capacity, prompting emergency energy conservation measures.
Authorities have asked households and major industrial users to reduce electricity consumption, particularly between 5 PM and 10 PM. Freight trains have been restricted during those hours, while decorative lighting at major landmarks in Budapest has been switched off. Companies including Mol, Gedeon Richter, Suzuki, Mercedes-Benz, Audi and BMW have also agreed to reduce electricity use.
Romania is similarly struggling with falling Danube levels. Authorities are preparing to sink four rock-filled barges into the river to redirect water towards the country’s only operational nuclear reactor and extend its operation for several more days.
Extreme heat and drought are also disrupting transport and industry across Europe. In Germany, falling water levels on the Rhine are forcing cargo vessels to operate only partially loaded, increasing freight costs for commodities such as grain, coal, minerals and petroleum products. The river is a critical commercial artery, making prolonged low water levels a major concern for European supply chains.
France and the Balkans are simultaneously battling heightened wildfire risks. In southeastern France’s Var region, a major wildfire that began on July 20 has burned more than 60 square kilometres. Although firefighters have managed to stop the blaze from spreading, authorities warn that extremely dry conditions and strong winds could trigger renewed fires.
Serbia is also battling multiple wildfires, including a major blaze in pine forests west of Belgrade and another near Kraljevo. In Bosnia and Herzegovina, tourists are escaping temperatures approaching 40°C by taking refuge in the UNESCO-listed Vjetrenica Cave, where temperatures remain around 11°C throughout the year.
A recent heat-impact analysis estimated that France could face around $240 billion loss in terms of economic output through 2030 as an impact of summer extreme temperatures. Italy is also said to suffer from an economic loss of $147 billion, Germany at $131 billion and Spain at about $120 billion.
The economic impact is particularly severe in sectors such as agriculture and construction, where temperatures above 30°C can sharply reduce productivity or damage crops. The growing frequency of extreme heat is therefore emerging not merely as a seasonal weather challenge, but as a systemic risk to Europe’s economy, infrastructure and public health.
