The climate crisis and heatwaves of Europe is intensifying and rapidly engulfing the continent at a massive scale. As the latest catastrophic impact of climate change, the European continent is burning with rigorous wildfires. Particularly, France and Spain are the worst-hit countries in Europe, which are falling into the wildfire trap of the climate crisis. Unable to bear the brunt of wildfire and its associated impact, Paris has evacuated more than 1 lakh people and Madrid has declared a national emergency.
As per the reports, the wildfires engulfing Europe have swollen more than 3,29,000 hectares of vegetation, thus further steepening the climate crisis. The crops have been destroyed, further mounting the burden on the farmers, who were hitherto suffering from heatwaves and its adverse impact on agriculture. The transport services have also been destroyed as an impact of the wildfire in many parts of the continent and most importantly, the health of the people living in the vicinity has been affected.
France & Spain at the epicentre of Europe heatwaves
As the wildfire escalates across France, French authorities evacuated 1,10,000 residents and tourists as the wildfire threatened to reach Cap Ferret peninsula, a popular tourist area in the west of Bordeaux and other areas in the region. Interior Minister Laurent Nunez, said that the wildfire was rapidly progressing towards Bordeaux metro area and other residential regions, thus people were evacuated overnight, to thwart catastrophes. French authorities also reiterated that the latest blazes of wildfire had burnt over 10,000 hectares of land that had a number of houses.
Similarly, Madrid has declared a national emergency across Spain as lives have turned miserable due to the escalating wildfire. The Spanish government has reiterated that it has taken control over the situation and the Interior Ministry is coordinating with the country’s military emergency unit to manage field operations and suppress the intensity of wildfire. However, it’s been a herculean task for the emergency team to contain the wildfire, as it is rapidly stretching across Spain, with intensified blazes.

The Spanish government thus, asserted that not just national, but international support is needed to contain these fires. Such is the intensity of the wildfire engulfing Europe. Temperatures were forecast to climb as high as 44C (111F) on July 24, Friday, with red and amber heat alerts throughout Spain’s central and eastern provinces. The European Union, Greece and other countries have come to the aid of Spain, by sending fighter aircrafts to contain the wildfire. More than 270 aircrafts have been deployed in Spain to extinguish the fire.
Cause of wildfire: Climate crisis induced by unsustainable growth model
The deadly wildfire currently engulfing Europe, is not a sudden phenomenon. This started early this year, however, rapidly escalated in the recent weeks.For example, earlier this month, a deadly blaze in Spain killed 13 people and burnt about 70 square kilometers near Almería. Also, in 2026 alone, a total of 1,40,000 hectares have burnt in Spain, which is more than three times the average for the past two decades.
From the past years, Europe is entangled in deadly climate change-induced catastrophes and this has escalated by leaps and bounds in 2026, earmarked with unusual rainfall, unusually high temperatures, heatwaves and associated adverse impact on health and economy. For example, unusually high rainfall during the spring months in Spain led to abundant vegetation growth.

This was followed by massive heat waves in several European countries. This led to rapid spread of wildfire that baked the vegetation, making it easier for flames to spread rapidly. This was coupled with peculiar dry atmospheric conditions, unpredictable harsh winds, that prevented moisture in the air and on trees and helped to rapidly carry the flames for thousands of acres, thus fuelling massive wildfires across Spain, France and other parts of the European continent.
Europe is the fastest warming continent on earth, which is witnessing beyond control climate catastrophes. The heatwaves in the recent months destroyed lives, livelihoods and killed hundreds of people across the continent. Scientists and climate analysts directly link this crisis of Europe to the human-centric and unsustainable western model of growth that was adopted for centuries, which was defined by exhaustive fuel combustion, rapid industrialisation and vehicular emissions. This contributed to pollution, global warming and the impact is being reaped by the present generation.
For example, as an impact of wildfire, land burning has increased by 57 per cent from 2022 to 2025, across Europe. The WHO has attributed the intensification of wildfires to climate change, rising temperature and urbanization. According to WHO, the smoke emitted by the wildfire is carried across the continent by strong winds and this causes heart, respiratory and other diseases among the people. It can also lead to cognitive impairment, eye infection etc.
The UN Climate official, thus reiterated transition to clean energy sources as the only solution to deal with increasing heatwaves, wildfire and other climate catastrophes of Europe.
