OREGON: A 16-year-old gunman killed three children, aged five, eight and 11, and a teacher at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon, on October 15, Thursday. The attacker was shot dead by a community member who followed and confronted him inside the school. Two others, including a seven-year-old child and a teacher, were critically injured. The shooting triggered a lockdown, an emergency response and an anxious wait for parents as authorities evacuated students and reunited them with their families. The latest incident has spiked concerns over growing gun culture & recurring episodes of violence across American schools.

Gunman opens fire outside school before storming the building

The shooting unfolded around 1PM local time, prompting an immediate response from police and emergency services. According to the Bend Police Department, the first emergency call came at 12.59PM, reporting that an individual carrying a long gun had fired several shots at a vehicle near the school. Within minutes, dispatchers received further calls reporting that a person had entered the school and begun shooting. Silver Rail Elementary was placed under lockdown at approximately 1.01PM as authorities rushed to contain the threat.

Bend Police Chief Mike Krantz said that the suspect, a 16-year-old Bend resident, had forced his way into the school by firing at locked doors. Investigators were examining the circumstances leading up to the attack, including whether the teenager had previously attended the school. His identity and the motive behind the shooting had not been publicly disclosed.

Officers arrived shortly after the initial calls and were informed that the gunman had been shot and killed. Krantz said a community member witnessed the suspect entering the school, followed him inside and confronted him, killing him before responding officers reached the scene. Police subsequently searched the building for further threats and provided emergency assistance to the victims.

The deceased were three children aged five, eight and 11, and a teacher. A seven-year-old child and a 54-year-old teacher were also critically injured and taken to St. Charles Medical Centre in Bend, according to reports. The attack shocked the community, with police spokesperson Sheila Miller describing the incident as devastating. Authorities said that the investigation was continuing and that further details would be released as they became available.

Students evacuated as parents gather at reunification centre

Following the shooting, officers searched classrooms and evacuated students and staff. School buses transported them to a reunification centre near a church, where anxious parents waited to collect their children. Authorities worked to reunite families and notify the relatives of those killed and injured. Silver Rail Elementary serves children from kindergarten through fifth grade and has approximately 450 students and 40 staff members.

Bend-La Pine Schools Superintendent Steven Cook expressed grief over the attack and offered condolences to the victims’ families. “We are stunned and heartbroken by this senseless tragedy”, Cook said, acknowledging the profound grief affecting the school community.

The school district cancelled classes across Bend-La Pine Schools on October 17, Friday, along with extracurricular activities and sporting events. Oregon Governor Tina Kotek urged residents to support one another and said that she had spoken with the community members who confronted the gunman. She praised the individual’s intervention as heroic and acknowledged the emotional burden of confronting such violence.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) confirmed that it was assisting local authorities. FBI Director Kash Patel said that federal agents were at the scene and that the agency would provide the resources needed to support the investigation.

US Senator Ron Wyden expressed solidarity with the victims and their families, renewing calls for action to address gun violence. The shooting has once again drawn attention to growing gun violence in American schools as authorities struggle to ensure safety of the children, teachers and other public in schools.
