Tamil Nadu: Temple lands, HR&CE appointment and Chennai Koyambedu project rows trigger fresh controversy

Fresh allegations against officials of the Tamil Nadu HR&CE Department have reignited concerns over temple administration, with activist T.R. Ramesh accusing senior officials of violating court orders and facilitating irregular appointments. Separate claims regarding a Koyambedu project on temple land have prompted BJP leaders to demand a government inquiry.

Even after a change of government in Tamil Nadu, with an actor-turned-politician becoming Chief Minister and a new minister, portrayed as pro-Hindu, taking charge of the HR&CE Department, the alleged misuse of temple funds and bureaucratic hurdles remain much the same as during the DMK regime. Observing these developments, temple activist T.R. Ramesh has sought an inquiry into what he describes as the continuing fraud by the Commissioners and Secretaries of the Tamil Nadu Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments (HR&CE) Department and has called for an end to the alleged malpractice.

Taking to his social media platform X, Ramesh made detailed remarks on the sorry state of affairs in the HR&CE Department. He said, “FRAUD by @tnhrcedept continues in Kanchipuram Sri Varadaraja Perumal Temple! After the Learned Judicial Magistrate-I, Kanchipuram, issued a final order on 05 June 2026 in C.M.P. No. 124 of 2026 directing the Vishnu Kanchi Police Station officials to register an FIR on a complaint dated 12.2025.”

He said, “The Commissioner of the TN HR&CE Department has now relieved the Assistant Commissioner, Ms R. Rajalakshmi, who was illegally functioning as the ‘Executive Trustee’ of the Sri Varadaraja Swamy Temple, Kanchipuram. (More about this lady Rajalakshmi later.) But in her place, one Mr Srinivasan, an Executive Officer who is now functioning at Sri Subramania Swamy Temple, Ettukudi, Tiruvarur District (another temple where Executive Officers have been functioning only by FRAUD), has now been posted as Executive Trustee (Additional Charge) of Kanchipuram Sri Varadaraja Perumal Temple. Ettukudi Temple is 300 km away from Kanchipuram.

“This is in complete violation of Section 25-A of the TN HR&CE Act, 1959. A strained FRAUD by the Commissioner who had to remove the corrupt lady from the Kanchipuram Temple. The above posting by the TN HR&CE Commissioner is in contempt of the orders of the Constitutional Bench of the Hon’ble Supreme Court of India and the orders of an Hon’ble Division Bench of the Madras High Court,” he added.

Ramesh has requested Hon’ble Minister @RameshOffcl to conduct an inquiry into this continuing FRAUD by the Commissioners of the @tnhrcedept and the Secretaries to the Religious Endowments Department and put an end to the alleged malpractice. He said the Hon’ble Minister should not allow the continuing contempt of court orders by departmental officials.

In another post on X, Ramesh said, “There is NOTHING called HR&CE land. What are stated as HR&CE lands are temple lands. Since @PKSekarbabu was Minister for both the HR&CE Department and CMDA in the DMK Government, this fraudulent approval could have become ‘possible’. I am ready to file a case against this illegal alienation if details are kindly provided to me.”

YouTuber Savukku Shankar, in a post on X, said, “From February 2025 to May 2026, Prakash IAS, as Member Secretary, CMDA, made Rs 350 crore. He also gave money on interest to several political candidates during elections. He is the one who cleared the Koyambedu Baashyam project, which was built on one-and-a-half acres of HR&CE land in Koyambedu. The Baashyam project is without sewage, water and power connections. Chennai Metro Rail has also raised objections to this project. Baashyam’s Crown Residences, Koyambedu, is one big scam.”

Savukku Shankar attached a media report in this regard.

The recent allegations accusing IAS officer G. Prakash of illegally selling temple land in Koyambedu are part of an unverified and politically charged social media campaign. They specifically stem from a public post by Savukku Shankar, who alleged that G. Prakash, in his capacity as the Member Secretary of the Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA), was involved in the matter.

TN BJP Senior Spokesman Narayanan Thirupathy said the news had appeared in a DMK-run Tamil daily.

— Narayanan Thirupathy (@narayanantbjp) June 11, 2026

He has urged the Tamil Nadu Government to launch a probe to ascertain the veracity of the accusations against officials and former DMK rulers. If found to be true, the government should take appropriate action against those concerned.
