Chennai: The Election Commission of India (ECI) has published the Index Cards and Statistical Reports on ECINET detailing the electoral statistics and constituency-wise data of the Tamil Nadu Assembly Elections, offering a comprehensive overview of voter participation, candidate performance, polling infrastructure, and voting patterns across the State.

Tamil Nadu has a total of 234 Assembly constituencies, comprising 188 General constituencies, 44 Scheduled Caste (SC) reserved constituencies, and 2 Scheduled Tribe (ST) reserved constituencies.

The data released by the ECI showed that a total of 4,023 candidates contested the elections across the State. Constituency-wise contest intensity revealed that:

2 constituencies had 5-10 candidates,
16 constituencies had 11-15 candidates,
123 constituencies witnessed contests involving 11-15 candidates,
93 constituencies recorded contests with more than 15 candidates.
The average number of contestants per constituency stood at 17. The minimum number of candidates in a constituency was 5, while the maximum touched 79 candidates in a single constituency.

Electoral roll statistics released by the ECI showed that Tamil Nadu had a total electorate of 5,74,11,793 voters. This included:

2,80,97,003 male voters,
2,93,07,062 female voters,
7,728 third gender voters.

According to the statistical report, a total of 4,88,03,000 electors voted excluding postal ballots. The polling percentage excluding postal ballots stood at:

Male voters: 83.77%,
Female voters: 86.20%,
Third gender voters: 58.46%,
Overall polling percentage: 85.01%.
The State’s final polling percentage, including postal ballots, was recorded at 86.03%.

The ECI report further stated that the total votes polled through EVMs and postal ballots stood at 4,93,89,958. Out of these:

Total valid votes: 4,91,24,320,
NOTA votes: 1,99,805,
NOTA share of total votes: 0.4%.
Postal ballot data published in the report showed:

Total postal votes cast: 5,86,954,
Rejected postal votes: 65,047,
Rejected postal votes percentage: 11.08%.
Tamil Nadu conducted polling through a vast election infrastructure comprising 75,064 polling stations across the State. The average number of electors assigned per polling station was 765.

The performance statistics of contesting candidates revealed:

Total male candidates: 3,579,
Total female candidates: 443,
Third gender candidates: 1,
Total candidates: 4,023.
Among the elected candidates:

211 were male,
23 were female,
No third gender candidate was elected.
The report also stated that:

2,985 male candidates forfeited their deposits,
366 female candidates forfeited their deposits,
1 third gender candidate forfeited deposit,
Total candidates forfeiting deposits: 3,352.
The Index Cards and Statistical Reports have been released on ECINET as part of the ECI’s post-election statistical documentation process.

The data reflects Tamil Nadu’s traditionally high voter participation, particularly among women voters whose turnout surpassed male participation. The figures also indicate intense electoral competition in several constituencies, with a significant number of candidates contesting and a high rate of deposit forfeitures, highlighting the dominance of major political fronts despite the presence of multiple contestants in the fray.

What are Index Cards:

Index Cards published on ECINET contain extensive election-related data across multiple parameters. The Statistical Reports include a wide range of electoral data such as State-wise and Assembly Constituency-wise elector details, number of polling stations, constituency-wise voter turnout, gender-wise polling participation, party-wise vote share, constituency summary reports, and detailed constituency-wise results.

The Index Cards can be accessed through both the ECINET mobile application under the “About Elections” section and on the official ECI website at Election Commission of India Statistical Reports

The EC simultaneously released a set of 14 Statistical Reports relating to the General Elections.

The ECI said this marks the first time that detailed Statistical Reports have been published within 72 hours of the declaration of election results.

The ECI described the publication of the Index Cards and Statistical Reports as a suo motu initiative aimed at enhancing transparency and accessibility of election-related information for stakeholders including researchers, academia, political observers, and the general public.

The Commission stated that the Statistical Reports have been prepared using secondary data compiled through the Index Cards system.
