Bus from Tamil Nadu with posters glorifying terrorist Dawood Ibrahim seized in Karnataka, sparks outrage

A private bus from Coimbatore was seized by police in Chikkamagaluru after authorities found stickers allegedly glorifying fugitive underworld don and designated terrorist Dawood Ibrahim displayed on its exterior. Acting on a tip-off, the Karnataka Police intercepted the vehicle carrying students on a trip and registered a case, citing concerns over public order and national integrity

BENGALURU: Karnataka police on March 28 seized a bus from Tamil Nadu for glorifying pictures of absconding terrorist Dawood Ibrahim.

Basavanahalli Police in Chikkmagaluru district seized a private bus on Saturday afternoon after finding stickers glorifying underworld don and declared terrorist Dawood Ibrahim pasted across its body.

According to media reports, the Tamil Nadu registered bus (TN21AU2699) was intercepted on R.G. Road around 15 hours pm following a tip-off. PSI Azaruddin M.S. and his team found multiple provocative slogans on the vehicle, including “Bombay underworld Dawood the Real Don”, “D Gangs of Mumbai and “Real Criminal Don”.

It is learnt that such glorification of a designated terrorist posed a direct threat to public order and national integrity, especially as the bus had begun attracting attention from local groups.

The bus, operated by a Coimbatore-based travel agency, was carrying 48 engineering students from Coimbatore on a college trip to Dandeli in Uttar Kannada district. After seizing the bus, the local Police made arrangements for students with an alternative vehicle to ensure the students’ safety.

Police have registered a suo motu case against the driver and owner under Section 197(1)(d) of the BNS, 2023. While the driver claimed he was only hired for the trip and had no knowledge of the stickers, police have summoned the owner, based in Coimbatore, to join the inquiry.  The driver of the travel agency bus said, “ I am only operating the bus and do not have anything to do with the controversial graphics.

Critics say the Travel bus operators exploited the Karnataka Congress government’s minority appeasement, more specifically, Muslims emboldened them to do such things. They knew that until the assembly elections due next year, they would have unfettered freedom to do anything they wanted. Vote bank politics is shaping at an alarming and dangerous level, as in Western countries. Once they get a majority in numbers or force governments to give special favours, these are the reasons. The government has reviewed the upper threshold for eligibility for minority status and lowered it to below 5 per cent. Muslims and Christians, with over 30 per cent on average, can’t be considered minorities, whereas in many places, Hindus become minorities. If it should be based on numbers, others like Hindus, Jains, Sikhs and smaller caste denominations like brahmin and others should be brought under this category”.

The critics say the bus owners took his admiration and daring declaration for designated terrorist Dawood Ibrahim a tad too far, resulting in his being put in soup, resulting in the seizure of his bus.

Police officers said that glorifying Dawood, who is declared a terrorist by India, was displayed in a way that undermined the country’s sovereignty and integrity. The seized bus was taken to the police station after detaining the driver for questioning. He told the police that the bus owner was in Coimbatore.

Taking note of the seriousness of the issue, Coimbatore police have warned that those who inscribe provocative messages on vehicles will face action.  They said vehicles should carry only socially responsible or awareness-oriented messages. Any content that promotes violence or glorifies criminal elements will not be tolerated; such vehicles will be seized, and strict legal action will follow”.

Critic asks, applying the same law, will the TN police initiate action against NTK for posters prominently with the banned LTTE leader V Prabakaran that are appearing all over the state as part of its poll campaign?”

NTK is going alone in all 234 constituencies. Its chief, who stood against lighting a lamp at Thiruparankundram and supported Muslims, now, in a recent campaign speech, assured Muslims that the death of ‘Appa Batsha ‘ (Coimbatore serial bomb blast accused who died of illness) should be remembered for his martyr status. All Muslims prisoners should be released forthwith.

For him, Batsha, who was considered the brains behind the Coimbatore blasts in 1998, is a father figure for him and a martyr.  54 Tamils who were killed are inhuman beings for him. What a hypocrisy”.

In Chennai, a couple of days ago, a Hindu van driver was beaten to death by three Muslims.

Tamil Nadu police initially tried it as a routine murder. But a probe later revealed that Mohammed Patha, Abdul Bashith and Abdul Baheen brutally killed the 30-year-old van driver, Kalaiselvan, after a minor argument over an issue.
