Temple tensions rise in Tamil Nadu amid allegations of threats by radical Muslims and DMK govt inaction

Muslims in Tamil Nadu have threatened Hindus to remove a temple or face consequences. Muslim women also joined their men in this threatening act. Police remained mute spectators, as they have been under the so called Dravidian Model that is claims to be champion of social justice, equality government.

A Vinayagar temple is located near the bus stand of Krishnagiri town. The Varasiddhi Vinayagar temple is more than 1000 years old and is ancient. Renovation works related to the Kumbabhisekam have already commenced and are going on well. Some Muslims who do not want the renovation and consecration of the temple have started creating trouble for people associated with it. They questioned the construction workers, renovation workers, and temple committee members as to how they could carry on the renovation work. It is learnt that these people who oppose are part of a fundamentalist group.

Hindu Munnani functionaries said that Muslims had built a mosque some five years ago, which was earlier a burial-cum-cremation ground. Telling locals to give way for a commercial complex, they shut down the burial ground. People believed the works of the government, but to their utmost surprise, a mosque was built. Since then, they have been causing hindrance to the functioning of the temple, poojas, festivals, and disturbing devotees and people behind the temple administration.

In this background, a group of Muslims gathered in front of a house and started issuing threats using filthy language. In a video circulating on social media, a man wearing a skull cap could be seen threatening the people in the house and trying to assault them. Voices of women in the house asking their men to come in were heard in the video. Police, who were present, only pushed the Hindu men inside their home and watched the Muslim men staging their acts, occasionally shooing them away. In support of the Muslim men, a large number of burqa-clad women, with faces covered with hijab and face veils, also threatened the Hindu family in a high-pitched tone.

Devotees who tried to carry out upkeep of the Hindu temple under Muslim occupation were arrested by police. There is a dilapidated Viswanatheeswarar temple and a parcel of vacant land. Due to its poor condition, there have been no poojas, and it has become uncared for and unvisited by devotees. When devotees entered the temple to remove weeds and maintain it in a clean condition, they were stopped by police. They were arrested and detained in a nearby marriage hall. The detained devotees went on a hunger strike, demanding that they be allowed to continue the Uzhavara pani (work related to upkeep of temples).

In a similar incident, a united voice and protest by Hindus prevented a Hindu temple from being pulled down by authorities. There is a Vinayagar, Idumban, and Murugan temple in Ramanathapuram in Thippireddy Alli village in Dharmapuri district. On the instigation of Christians, revenue and police authorities razed these temples. On hearing this, Hindu Munnani functionaries and devotees gathered and held a protest. Police and revenue authorities retracted their action and moved away, sensing the mood of the public and likely tension that could adversely affect the atmosphere in the then poll-bound state.

Hindu Munnani has petitioned the HR and CE to retrieve land measuring one acre out of 4.5 acres, worth Rs. 50 crore in today’s market price, which is under illegal encroachment. In that encroached land, there are five houses and a godown (Wisdom School), and more than ten school buses are parked there.

In Pudupettai, Muslims ate biryani and other non-vegetarian food in front of a Bhagwan Murugan temple, but the authorities did not do anything to stop them. This is said to be an attempt to create communal clashes and disturb public peace. One critic said, “If Hindus ate pork-based food, would they keep quiet? They are doing it with purpose, hoping police and the DMK government would not act, fearing their anger would incur vote loss.”

Temple activist TR Ramesh, in a post on X, said: “The useless, corrupt, anti-Hindu tradition @tnhrcedept has allowed many prime properties belonging to Hindu temples across Tamil Nadu to be encroached for decades. One such example is the prime property of 14 grounds at Luz Church Road, Mylapore, occupied by Amrutanjan Ltd for more than 25 years. Not less than ₹50 crores must be pending from that encroacher company, without taking interest into account. If they cannot protect valuable temple land, year after year the misfits in government cause a loss of Rs. 110 crores to Sri Kapaliswarar temple. It is high time the misfits are legally removed and the temple handed back to the Mudhaliar community who built this temple in its current location.”

In the Chennai harbour area, in violation of rules, Ramadan celebrations are to take place in a private school (Don Bosco). According to Hindu Munnani, it is a clear violation of the recent GO of the DMK government prohibiting the use of private school premises for any religious purposes other than educational ones. Hindu Munnani has submitted a petition to the Muthialpet police station.

Earlier, soon after the Model Code of Conduct came into force in Tamil Nadu, a Hindu Munnani lawyers’ team inspected the Thiruchendur Murugan temple, which was in the news during HR and CE Minister PK Sekar Babu’s tenure. Devotees had protested over poor infrastructure, collection of hefty fees for darshan, abhishekam, and other rituals, and the alleged preference given to VIPs who paid large sums without receipts. The Hindu Munnani advocate team visited the temple despite opposition from HR and CE staff, described as Dravidian stocks.

Devotees visiting the historic Mahamaham Tank in Kumbakonam for a holy dip during the Masi month were shocked to find the water had turned blackish in colour. Foul-smelling sewage water was seen flowing into the sacred tank through its inlet channel, triggering widespread outrage among residents and pilgrims. Videos showing the contaminated water entering the tank circulated widely on social media, prompting public outrage. This reflects the functioning of the HR and CE department under DMK rule, according to the public.
