Kalaburagi: A deeply disturbing incident involving the alleged sexual assault of a mentally ill woman in Jevargi taluk of Kalaburagi district has sparked widespread outrage and condemnation, with citizens and activists demanding strict action against the accused and stronger protection for vulnerable individuals.
The shocking incident reportedly took place in Andola village under Jevargi taluk, where the victim had been staying at a local monastery for some time. According to sources, the woman, believed to be originally from the Yadgir district, had been living on the mutt premises and had survived on food and support provided by the institution and villagers.
Taking advantage of the woman’s vulnerable condition, a local resident identified as Mushtaq Hussain allegedly lured her away from the monastery and took her to a nearby agricultural field. Police sources said the man is accused of sexually assaulting the woman there.
The crime came to light after some local youths became suspicious upon learning that the accused had taken the woman away from the mutt. Acting on the information, they rushed to the spot and were reportedly shocked to witness the disturbing act.
The youths allegedly recorded the incident on their mobile phones. Realising that he had been caught, the accused reportedly panicked and tried to escape. Witnesses said he pleaded with the youths not to reveal the incident and apologised repeatedly, asking them to forgive him.
However, the video was later shared on social media by a local youth, following which it spread rapidly and triggered strong reactions from the public. The disturbing visuals have drawn condemnation from citizens, activists and community leaders, many of whom described the incident as inhuman and shameful.
The viral video prompted authorities to take swift action. Based on a complaint filed by the Child Development Project Officer of Jevargi, police registered a case against the accused at Jevargi Police Station.
Police officials said a First Information Report has been filed under relevant sections of the law related to sexual assault. However, soon after the case was registered, the accused reportedly fled the village and has been absconding.
A police team has launched a search operation to trace and arrest him. Officers said they are examining the video footage and collecting further evidence to strengthen the case.
The incident has sparked intense debate about the safety of vulnerable individuals, particularly mentally ill persons who often rely on charitable institutions and religious centres for shelter and food. Social activists have expressed anger over the alleged exploitation of a helpless woman who was already battling mental health issues.
Activists and local residents have demanded that authorities ensure strict punishment for the accused and take measures to prevent such incidents in the future. Many have also urged the government to strengthen monitoring mechanisms at religious institutions and shelters where vulnerable individuals reside.
“This is not just a crime but a grave violation of humanity,” said one local activist, adding that society must collectively stand against such brutality. Citizens have also called for faster investigation and immediate arrest of the accused, stressing that justice must be delivered swiftly to restore public confidence in the law.
