Guwahati: Latest political turmoil and continuous provocative comments against Bharat by various political leaders and security officials of Bangladesh has made the situation sensitive in India, especially in the border regions. In this backdrop, the Indian army has cautiously monitored the situation and top army commanders have reviewed the preparedness of the defence mechanism along the international border.

Eastern Command Commander Lt Gen R.C. Tiwari, along with General Officer Commanding Lt Gen Abhijit S. Pendharkar, visited the India-Bangladesh border areas in Mizoram and Tripura to review the prevailing security situation and preparedness along the frontier. In a post in the X social media platform, the Eastern Command of the Indian Army on December 19 said: “Lt Gen R.C. Tiwari, Army Cdr EC, along with Senior Military Officers, visited the company operating Base of Assam Rifles and BSF under Spear Corps at Parva in Mizoram, to review the security situation along the Indo-Bangladesh Border”.

“Army Cdr EC lauded the Assam Rifles and BSF troops for their steadfastness, resilience and a high level of operational preparedness”, the post said. Both Lt Gen Tiwari, Lt Gen Pendharkar, accompanied by top commanders, visited southern Tripura’s Belonia and reviewed the situation along the border. Four Indian northeastern states of Tripura (856 km), Meghalaya (443 km), Mizoram (318 km) and Assam (263 km) share a 1,880-km border with Bangladesh. BSF has been guarding the India-Bangladesh border.

The political turmoil in Bangladesh has led to deadly violence against minority Hindus residing in the neighbouring country. One Hindu boy identified as Dipu Das, a factory worker, in Mymensingh district of Bangladesh was brutally killed by a Islamist mob and later burnt his body hanging on a tree in front of hundreds of people.

Dozens of political leaders, military officials including interim head Muhammad Yunis have previously passed objectionable comments on Northeast. The Greater Bangladesh map which has been patronised by pro-Jamaat Islamist leaders includes all 7 states of Northeast region. The growing anti-Indian conspiracies in Bangladesh has raised the security concerns in the NE region, particularly Assam and Tripura. Assam has a huge Bangladesh-origin population and many Bangladesh based Jihadi modules were busted in Assam and Tripura in the recent years.

The security of sensitive ‘Chicken Neck’ which connects Northeast with the rest of India is also a major concern for the security forces. The Indian army has raised three new garrisons along the International border to improve the presence of forces in the Indo-Bangladesh border. As of now security forces are on high alert along the border to prevent any unwanted attempt by radical forces against Bharat.
