Defence Minister Rajnath Singh is on a two-day official visit to Australia with the agenda of strengthening New Delhi-Canberra defence relations. On October 9, during the meeting with his Australian counterpart Richard Marles(Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister of Australia), Rajnath Singh held detailed discussions on boosting India-Australia relations in the domain of defence and other strategic affairs. “We reviewed the full spectrum of India-Australia defence cooperation, including defence industry, cyber defence, maritime security and regional challenges,” Defence Minister said on the X social media platform.
Meanwhile, Rajnath Singh highlighted the potential for the defence industry cooperation among both the nations, as India is emerging as a high-quality, self-reliant and globally renowned defence manufacturing hub. “We discussed potential for deeper defence industry partnerships between India and Australia”, he further added. During the bilateral discussions, India and Australia also agreed to further revolutionize the comprehensive strategic partnership beyond the defence sector.
Both nations also discussed the prospects of cooperation in ensuring regional stability and combating cross-border terrorism in an era of navigating unpredictable geopolitical threats and cross-border menace. India and Australia also reiterated to deepen cooperation in the path of carving and ensuring a free, open, inclusive and rule-based Indo-pacific, as the maritime region is emerging as a highly-contested geopolitical theatre.

Defence Minister of Australia Richard Marles remarked the defence partnership between India and Australia as a “hugely significant step” in boosting the operational partnership between the Armed Forces of both the nations.
“I think the significance of today is that what we are seeing in terms of deep trust and strategic alignment is now being expressed at a much deeper operational level of engagement between our two defence forces. The agreement that we have signed in terms of staff talks between our operational commands is hugely significant. We are very excited about that”, said Richard Marles.
Defence Minister meets Australia PM Albanese
During the official visit Defence Minister Rajnath Singh also met the Prime Minister of Australia Anthony Albanese. Both leaders assured to strengthen India-Australia defence partnership and also the bilateral relations in other sectors. “Excellent meeting with the Prime Minister of Australia Hon Anthony Albanese in Canberra. He fondly recalled his deep association with India. I am confident that India-Australia bilateral relationship will continue to grow deeper and stronger”, Rajnath Singh said.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Albanese also appreciated the growing importance of India-Australia defence partnership. He also spoke about the importance of working for free, open and prosperous Indo-Pacific. “Australia and India defence partnership keeps getting stronger-built on trust, shared interests and a commitment to a peaceful, secure and prosperous Indo-Pacific”, said PM Albanese.

Rajnath Singh witness F-35 refuelling
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh also witnessed air-to-air refuelling of the F-35 fighter aircraft, while he was travelling from Sydney to Canberra. Apparently, India and Australia have signed an agreement in 2024, where the Indian Armed Forces and the Royal Australian Air Force(RAAF) have agreed to undertake air-to-air refuelling. “Raksha Mantri Rajnath Singh onboard KC-30A Australian Royal Australian Airforce multirole tanker transport aircraft. He witnessed the air-to-air refuelling of F-35 while travelling from Sydney to Canberra” wrote the Defence Ministry in India.
This marks a major testament in the solidifying India-Australia defence relations and also helps New Delhi in understanding the technical or operational dynamics of the defence mechanisms.
Rajnath Singh receives aboriginal welcome at the Parliament
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh also was given a traditional aboriginal way of welcome at the Parliament of Australia. He was accompanied by the Australian Defence Minister Richard Marles. The smoke ceremony is an aboriginal Australian ritual which acknowledges the traditional custodians of the land.
India-Australia defence relations
India and Australia, being the key players and geopolitical stalwarts in the Indo-pacific, has considerable extent of defence and security cooperation. Both nations are members of the QUAD grouping and strongly advocate for free, open, inclusive and rule-based Indo-pacific against any external aggression or expansionist acts.
In 2024, Australia declared India as “top-tier security partner”. Both nations also undertake 2+2 Ministerial dialogue in the domain of defence and foreign affairs. New Delhi and Canberra have also inked agreement for the reciprocal access of military bases in order to ensure logistics support and operational readiness under critical circumstances.
India and Australia also participate in bilateral and multilateral military exercises such as AustraHind(joint military exercise), AusIndex(naval exercise), Malabar exercise(naval exercise) and Pitch Black(air combat exercise).
