Born of Resistance: How Hindu Munnani emerged to defend Sanatan Dharma in Tamil Nadu

For the past 45 years, Hindu Munnani has built an extensive network across Tamil Nadu, reaching grassroots levels including village panchayats, and has become a formidable force in safeguarding Hindu interests

Tamil Nadu has long suffered due to aggressive religious conversions by Christian missionaries, Islamic extremism, and targeted attacks against Sanatana Dharma under the guise of atheism. During these turbulent times, no significant effort was made to raise awareness or resist these threats. As a result, it was the Hindu society that bore the brunt of this ideological and cultural assault.

In this context, the matter was discussed in a 1980 RSS state executive meeting held at Karur. At that time, Shri R. Gopalan was serving as the RSS State Pracharak. Shri Rama Gopalan elaborated extensively on the unique issues facing Tamil Nadu and emphasised the need for a solution tailored specifically to the state’s circumstances.

Recognising this unique regional challenge, RSS leadership entrusted Shri Rama Gopalan with the task of forming a dedicated movement to address these issues. Thus, Hindu Munnani was formed to speak for, defend, and unify Hindus.

Although Hindu Munnani operates like a political movement, it was resolved that it would not contest elections or seek power in government. Its focus would remain purely on protecting and promoting Hindu identity and values.

For the past 45 years, Hindu Munnani has built an extensive network across Tamil Nadu, reaching grassroots levels including village panchayats, and has become a formidable force in safeguarding Hindu interests.

Major Contributions of Hindu Munnani

• Ganesh Chaturthi Festivals: Conducts public celebrations across 1.5 lakh locations in Tamil Nadu, promoting Hindu unity.
• Vellore Jalakanteshwarar Temple: Reinstated the deity at this temple in 1984 through mass mobilisation, after it was left without an idol for years.
• Thiruvarur Temple Chariot: Successfully revived the halted grand chariot festival through public support.
• Rama Sethu Protection: Fought both legal and public battles to protect Rama Sethu from destruction under the Sethusamudram Project.
• Resistance Against Terrorism: Even after losing several members to Islamist extremism, Hindu Munnani exposed and resisted these threats, not just in Tamil Nadu but across the nation.

Why this Conference?

Every five years, Hindu Munnani organises a major state-level conference to promote a core message. Due to the COVID pandemic, the last scheduled conference couldn’t be held. Now, the 8th State Conference is being organised as the Murugan Devotees’ Conference.

In recent years, there has been a systematic attack on Lord Murugan’s worship in Tamil Nadu:

• Pathayatra devotees and milk pot carriers face humiliation.
• Special darshan charges in temples exploit ordinary devotees.
• In Thiruchendur, devotees were detained for hours in queues, and when they raised complaints, the HR & CE Minister insulted them instead of resolving the issue.
• Christian groups publicly declared their intent to convert Chennimalai into Calvary Hill, and MP Nawaz Kani called Thirupparankundram as Sikandar Hill, claiming it as Waqf property.

All these have deeply hurt Murugan devotees.

To counter this, Murugan devotees must unite and show our spiritual and social strength to both the government and politicians.

Details of the Conference

• Date: June 22, 2025
• Venue: Madurai
• Time: 3 PM to 8 PM

Prior to the event, spiritual darshan from the six abodes of Lord Murugan (Arupadai Veedu) will be organised over 10 days.

The event will also feature devotional cultural programs and speeches. A massive chanting of the Kandha Sashti Kavasam by 5 lakh devotees is set to become a world-record devotional event.

Over 1 crore invitations have been distributed to families, political leaders, community heads, and spiritual leaders across the state.

This is not just an event,  it’s a historic awakening of Murugan devotion and Hindu unity.
