New Delhi: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) on June 13 chargesheeted 17 accused, including 16 absconders, in the 2024 case of attacks on Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) camps by CPI (Maoist) terror operatives said the agency in a press note issued on June 14.

The attack was carried out by the cadres of the proscribed Maoist group, armed with automatic weapons and BGLs in Bijapur district of Chhattisgarh in January 2024.

One of the chargesheeted accused is under arrest and identified as Sodi Baman alias Deval. The absconders include 2 central committee members, 2 special zonal/ state committee members (szc/scm) and other top cadres of PLGA BN No. 01, Telangana state committee and Pamed area committee, informed the NIA.

The chargesheet filed on June 13 before NIA Special Court at Jagdalpur has charged all of the anmed accused under various sections of IPC, Arms Act, Explosive Substances Act, and Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act.

The case RC-01/2024/NIA/RPR relates to the attack on CRPF new camp at Dharmavaram and two adjacent CRPF/CoBRA camps at Chintawagu and Pamed in District Bijapur, on January 16. The attackers had attempted to loot weapons and other belongings of security forces from the camps. Around a dozen CRPF personnel at Dharmavaram CRPF camp, which was set up in December 2023, were injured in the attack.

NIA had taken over the case from the local police in February 2024 and named 21 Maoists along 250-300 unknown armed cadres of proscribed terrorist organization CPI(Maoist).

The agency’s investigations into the case revealed that the chargesheeted accused had been involved in the recruitment of youth, as part of a criminal conspiracy to wage war against the democratically elected Government of Bharat.

“They were in possession of prohibited arms, ammunition and explosive materials, and had organised and attended conspiracy meetings. They had also established training dummy camp as replica of the target camp, imparted training and given motivational speeches to their armed cadres to carry out an armed rebellion, besides conducting recce of the said camps and executing the final attacks,” added the release issued by NIA. Further investigations in the case are continuing.

Notably, hundreds of cadres of the proscribed Maoist group launched an attack on CRPF Dharmavaram camp in the evening of January 16.  The attack was planned thoroughly and separate group of Maoist fired gunshots at other nearby security camps simultaneously to deny any reinforcement at the Dharmavaram camp.

Maoists before the attack had also planted a large number of Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) along the route to deny any reinforcement at the camp. They also had disrupted the route by cutting trees.

In additions, the extremists during the attack were donning grass made specific uniforms to hid their movement till they take position near the camp. They were carrying cutters to cut the fences and make a possible entry into the camp. Their attempt to enter the camp however was foiled by the alerted personnel who eventually succeeded in compelling the Maoists to retreat following a fierce gun battle, lasting for 3 to 4 hours.
