Guwahati: The Indian Army has successfully concluded ARMEX-24, a high-altitude adventure expedition that pushed the limits of physical endurance, mental strength, and operational preparedness. Spanning 28 days—including acclimatisation—the expedition was a true test of resilience, taking soldiers from the humid jungles of North Bengal to the snow-covered peaks of Sikkim, traversing a staggering 146 kilometres through some of the most demanding terrain in the Eastern Himalayas.

Conducted from March 22 to April 14, 2025, ARMEX-24 involved 18 days of non-stop movement through high-altitude terrain after an initial period of acclimatisation. The team faced a daunting mix of steep gradients, fluctuating weather patterns, and unforgiving landscapes. Despite the challenges, they completed the route with determination, showcasing the discipline and endurance that the Indian Army is known for.

The core team comprised 20 handpicked military personnel, each selected for their physical fitness, mental fortitude, and commitment to mission excellence. Operating as a cohesive unit, the soldiers navigated rapidly changing altitudes and weather conditions, ascending from sub-tropical forest zones to elevations exceeding 14,000 feet—areas typically plagued by oxygen scarcity and extreme cold.

A senior Army official praised the efforts, stating, “ARMEX-24 is more than just an expedition—it reflects the Indian Army’s ethos of perseverance, discipline, and operational readiness. These missions sharpen leadership, strengthen camaraderie, and prepare our soldiers to perform under pressure in any terrain.”

Forging leaders, inspiring a nation

Expeditions like ARMEX-24 are not just about adventure—they are critical to ensuring that Indian soldiers are prepared for real-world combat scenarios in similar high-altitude conditions. Such missions offer invaluable training in endurance, navigation, survival, and team coordination—skills that are vital for operations in the mountainous regions of India’s northern frontiers.

Moreover, they serve as an inspiration to the nation’s youth, encouraging them to challenge themselves, explore the spirit of adventure, and consider service to the nation through the armed forces.

The successful execution of ARMEX-24 reinforces the Indian Army’s unwavering focus on terrain-realistic training and operational preparedness. It also highlights the adaptability and tenacity of Indian soldiers, who are trained not only for war but to overcome nature’s toughest hurdles with courage and composure.

As the tricolour flew proudly over the snowy summits at the expedition’s conclusion, ARMEX-24 stood as a bold reminder of the Indian Army’s motto—“Service Before Self”—and the relentless drive to remain ever ready to defend the nation, no matter the challenge or altitude.
