In a significant political development, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has selected Rekha Gupta as its Chief Ministerial candidate for Delhi following a Legislature Party meeting held in the capital today. The decision marks a historic moment for the party, as Gupta is set to become the second woman Chief Minister of Delhi from the BJP after Sushma Swaraj.
The selection process was overseen by BJP National Secretary Om Prakash Dhankar and former Union Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad, who were appointed as central observers for the meeting. BJP leadership reportedly considered Gupta’s extensive experience in municipal governance and her potential appeal as a woman leader to spearhead the party’s government in the capital.
A Strategic Choice for Delhi
Gupta, currently serving as the General Secretary of the Delhi BJP, brings a wealth of political experience. She has previously held the position of National Vice President of BJP’s Mahila Morcha and won the Shalimar Bagh (North-West) seat in the 2025 Delhi Assembly elections with an impressive margin of 68,200 votes.
A lawyer by profession, her political journey began in student leadership when she served as the President of the Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU) from 1996 to 1997. She later transitioned into municipal politics, securing victories as a Councillor from Uttari Pitampura (Ward 54) in 2007 and 2012. Her tenure as Mayor of the South Delhi Municipal Corporation further bolstered her administrative credentials.
Delayed Announcement Amid High-Level Consultations
The announcement of the BJP’s Chief Ministerial pick was initially delayed due to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent return from an official visit to the United States. The central observers, along with BJP’s National Vice President Baijayant ‘Jai’ Panda, conducted extensive assessments of the political landscape before finalising the leadership. Unlike in some BJP-ruled states, reports suggest that Delhi’s government structure may not include a Deputy Chief Minister.
Following Gupta’s selection, the swearing-in ceremony is scheduled for February 20, with six cabinet ministers expected to take oath alongside her. The BJP, which secured a decisive victory in the recently held Delhi Assembly elections—defeating the incumbent Aam Aadmi Party (AAP)—is now focusing on forming a stable government in the capital.
BJP’s Women-Centric Governance Plan
As the party prepares to assume governance, bureaucrats in the Delhi administration have been directed to draft schemes centred around women’s welfare—an agenda prominently featured in BJP’s election manifesto. Officials from the Delhi Women and Child Development Department have been tasked with preparing proposals for key initiatives, including a monthly allowance of Rs 2,500 for all women, financial assistance for pregnant women, and support for economically weaker families in arranging their daughters’ marriages. These draft proposals are expected to be submitted by Thursday.
With Rekha Gupta at the helm, the BJP is set to embark on a new chapter in Delhi’s governance, focusing on women’s empowerment and municipal reforms. As she takes charge, her leadership will be closely watched, particularly in how she steers the party’s agenda in the national capital.
