Guwahati: In a significant crackdown on counterfeit currency operations, the East Guwahati Police Department (EGPD) team from Dispur Police Station arrested two men and seized Rs 34,09,000 Fake Indian Currency Notes (FICN) along with a fake piece of gold.

The suspects, identified as Hiramul Islam (24) from Bihpuria and Nazirul Islam (19) from Laluk in Lakhimpur district in Assam, were apprehended during a routine vehicle check. The operation unfolded when the EGPD team intercepted a vehicle registered as AS12 CC 0399 and conducted a thorough search.

During the search, the police discovered a substantial amount of counterfeit ₹500 denomination notes and a fake piece of gold. Hiramul Islam and Nazirul Islam were immediately taken into custody, and the counterfeit currency and fake gold were confiscated.

An EGPD spokesperson confirmed the arrests and the subsequent legal actions. “The suspects are now facing charges related to possession and distribution of counterfeit currency and fraud. This operation underscores our commitment to cracking down on illegal activities and protecting the economic integrity of our community,” the spokesperson stated.

Impact and Future Course of Action

The EGPD’s swift action has prevented the circulation of a large amount of counterfeit currency, which could have had severe economic implications. Legal proceedings are now underway, and the authorities are likely to investigate further to uncover any larger networks involved in the distribution of fake currency.

This incident highlights the ongoing issue of counterfeit currency in the region and the importance of vigilant law enforcement. The community is encouraged to report any suspicious activities related to counterfeit currency to help authorities combat this pervasive problem.

Earlier on June 1, an East Guwahati Police Department (EGPD) team from Dispur Police Station uncovered a clandestine FICN trading operation in a house near DownTown area, resulting in the seizure of a printing machine and Rs 3,49,500 in Fake Indian Currency Notes (FICN). The raid led to the arrest of Shtragan Riyang (30) and Alasranha Riyang (52), both hailing from Kumarghat in Tripura, along with Moinul Haque (23) from Laluk in Lakhimpur district in Assam. Police sources said that the arrested individuals are part of an Interstate fake currency note racket. Investigations are on to bust the racket.
